During a joint interview with Jens Stoltenberg, the Norwegian secretary-general of NATO, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, fresh from his bout with the Chinese in Anchorage, took on Angela Merkel and the Germans.

Issue: Nord Stream 2, the Baltic Sea pipeline Vladimir Putin is building to complement his Nord Stream 1 and carry more natural gas from Russia to Germany, and from there to other NATO nations.

The original Nord Stream pipeline, also consisting of two strands of pipe along the Baltic Sea floor, was completed in 2011.

In his meeting with Stoltenberg in Brussels, Blinken warned that Western companies participating in building Nord Stream 2, which is 90% complete, would face sanctions mandated by Congress:

“President Biden has been very clear in saying that he believes the pipeline is a bad idea; it’s bad for Europe, bad for the United States,” said Blinken, adding, U.S. law “requires us to sanction companies participating in the efforts to complete the pipeline.”

What is behind American opposition to Russian natural gas going to Germany, and from there to NATO Europe?

First, the pipelines bypass Ukraine and Poland, cutting those countries out of the transit revenue. Second, we want NATO Germany to buy our own shale-produced natural gas.

Third, we object to a pivotal NATO ally increasing its present dependency for energy on the very nation against which the United States has defended that ally for 70 years.

Why are you Germans buying Russian gas when we are protecting you from Russian aggression, the Americans ask. It’s a fair question.

Last summer, an exasperated President Donald Trump announced plans to withdraw 12,000 troops from Germany in what was described as a “strategic” repositioning of U.S. forces in Europe.

Trump said the move was in response to Germany’s failure to meet national NATO targets on defense spending of at least 2% of GDP.

“We don’t want to be the suckers anymore,” said Trump “We’re reducing the force because they’re not paying their bills; it’s very simple.”

Merkel ignored Trump’s threat. The U.S. troops are still there.

This week, Blinken met with German foreign minister Heiko Maas to restate the U.S. concern over Nord Stream 2, while hastily adding that Germany is a vital NATO ally and the pipeline is “an irritant in a rock-solid alliance.”

One gets the impression that Merkel and the Germans will prevail, the pipeline will be completed, and the gas will begin to flow to Germany.

And that the Americans will accept it, rather than exacerbate the issue.

Yet, what does Germany’s willing and deepening dependence on Russian gas for its energy, as it moves off coal and nuclear power, tell us?

And what does Germany’s chronic refusal to meet the standard of NATO nations to contribute 2% of GDP to the common defense tell us?

ORDER IT NOW

Quite obviously, the Germans do not see Putin’s Russia as the military threat it was in the Cold War. And Berlin has come to believe that, even if it falls short of its commitments to spend more on defense, the Americans are bluffing. They are not going to leave Europe or NATO.

Why are the Germans not wrong to conclude this?

Because being the “last superpower,” “the leader of the free world,” the “indispensable nation,” the architect of the “rules-based international order” created by the World War II generation of Harry Truman, Dean Acheson, George Marshall and the rest, is how we define ourselves and our mission to mankind.

We can’t let go, because this is who we are and what we do.

Without this mission, what could justify the mammoth amounts we invest annually on NATO, national defense, foreign aid, the Indo-Pacific, the CIA and the Armed Forces of the United States?

Consider. Between 1989 and 1991, the Soviet Empire collapsed and disintegrated. The Berlin Wall came down. All the Red Army divisions went home from Europe. Communism ceased to be the ideology of the Soviet Union, which itself split apart into 15 separate nations.

Russia was no longer the largest captive nation of communism but a nation reaching out in friendship to the United States.

And what did we do in response?

We doubled the number of nations in NATO we are sworn to defend, moved the alliance deep into Eastern Europe and adopted a policy of containment of a shrunken Russia.

Having won the Cold War, and unable to find a new mission, we started a second Cold War to contain the new Russia — this time at the borders of Belarus, Ukraine and Georgia, as we had once contained the old USSR at the River Elbe.

Why does Angela Merkel not take seriously U.S. threats to pull our troops out of Germany, if the Germans won’t cancel Nord Stream 2 or pony up more for defense?

Because Merkel thinks the Americans are bluffing about going home from Europe, and thinks the Russia of Vladimir Putin is not the Russia she knew in the days of the GDR.

Is she wrong?

  2. Dunno, I think the Germans might wake up to, say, a naval blockade that murders 800,000 of their citizens over this.

  3. “Is she wrong?”
We all should know the answer — no, she is not.
It’s very simple — the US can not tolerate anything less than total domination — hegemony, if you like. The US has no equal — will not tolerate even the idea of a “peer”. However, it is no longer the 1990’s. Every year that passes US domination becomes less real & more of an arrogance & an affectation.
Both Russia & China refuse to be dominated. They refuse to act like dogs as the UK, Germany, Australia, Japan etc etc act. And they have the power to back up their sovereign convictions.
Nord stream 2 is another chip away at this conceit of domination, & for that reason is intolerable.

Shutting down nuclear power stations and coal was not such a great idea. But they knew that all along. Now, they want Russia to rescue their rotten policy with a pipeline. It is clear that representative democracy simply does not work. A determined minority with a fanatical plan can change the course for the entire country.

A government commission has agreed that Germany should phase out all coal-fired power plants by the end of 2038. The government is already planning to shut down nuclear power plants over the next three years.

Perhaps they’ve tired of American “protection” which is more like a mafia protection racket. Times have changed since ’45 so they may want to evolve policies that take them out of the old confrontational paradigm. They may have tired of having foreign troops on their soil. The US invaded to grab what it could as the spoils of war and wants to hang on forever. The US is an outsider, a continent away, trying to prevent the European countries from coming together in peaceful co-existence and making mutually beneficial trade deals.

Unfortunately they have immense pull via their unofficial partnership with influential German journalists.

It’s truly amazing, theyclaim to be “environmentalists”, but made it possible in their first term in federal goverment (1998-2005) that German soldiers are allowed to fight outside of NATO-territory and sent German soldiers to die in Afghanistan (and helped the USA in the Kosovo-war of ’99).

    An interesting item:

Green Party is an ‘arm of the US elites’ & doesn’t care about German interests – Merkel’s ally to RT

The Greens are trying to derail the Russia-led Nord Stream 2 pipeline because they don’t care about German interests and only do the bidding of the US, Max Otte, economist and member of Chancellor Merkel’s CDU party, told RT.

The latest polls predict that the Greens may claim 20% of the vote and come second – behind the ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU) – in the German federal election on September 24.

The party has promised to curb the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which will allow Russian gas to flow directly to Germany under the Baltic Sea, making it cheaper compared to delivering it from the US. The project that has already cost 9.5 billion euros is currently more than 95% complete. The Greens claim that the pipeline has “climate and energy implications,” while also infringing on the interests of Ukraine. Kiev may well lose transit money when the new route bypassing the Ukrainian territory is used to deliver gas to Europe.

Instead of pointing toward Ukraine, the Greens should better care about German and EU interests, Otte argued. Germany is now trying to move away from nuclear energy and coal, so it’s essential for the country to have diverse and reliable sources of natural gas, like Nord Stream 2, he explained.

As far as I understand, France is sitting pretty with their PWRs (sometimes you have to remove Greenpeace from premises, but that’s manageable) and has some leeway to provide electrical power to the hyped “all-electric vehicles” whereas Germany is already back-to-wall and is actually forced to sell their renewable electricity cheap to Norway when there is wind all over Europe and buy hydropower at top EURO from Norway when there is no wind anywhere in Europe. Sucks.

And that’s just for electricity. Most of energy needs are still covered by burning stuff found in the ground.

“Why are you Germans buying Russian gas when we are protecting you from Russian aggression, the Americans ask.”

The ‘protection’ angle may – I stress ‘may’ – have held validity up to the point the Berlin Wall came down.

The US promised Gorbachev to not to move NATO “one inch eastward”, if Russia brought down the Wall, and allowed German reunification. Gorbachev, interested in detente, and looking to buy time to fix the many problems the USSR created in it’s own domestic domain, agreed. However – SURPRISE – this turned out to be a bald-faced lie on the part of America. Look at a map of the NATO countries in Europe to see just how egregious this lie was.

Gorbachev was quickly deposed after perestroika, and with Yeltsin – a western stooge – in power in Russia, a greatly diminished Russia was in *no* position whatsoever to start any invasion (of Western Europe). The West was well aware of this, was in a position of supreme power in Europe, and faced no threat. This lie was to flavour US-Russian relations to this very day.

Not so politely, you can stuff the protection racket angle.

Lastly, how Germany obtains the resources it needs, is a strictly German affair. The US has no right whatsoever to dictate where Germany can conduct it’s business. America’s protection racket is almost busted Mr. Buchanan. Get off your exceptional(ly) high horse.

You best remember that water vapor is to be feared because it is an even more powerful green house ‘gas’ than the much dreaded CO2.

That anyone can take this stuff seriously just goes to show how ignorant the masses are.

Nuclear is the only short term solution to the world’s energy needs. The mistake was going with pressurized light water reactors decades ago to get their plutonium waste for the military’s bombs. Molten Salt Reactors in the form of non pressurized Small Modular Reactors using Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor technology is currently the best option. The Chinese are diligently working on perfecting their version while the US has made it essentially illegal to even try.

The entire world could be rid of all the oil wars, the supposed CO2 pollution, the middle east hot spot and money spent on military toys for threatening each other over energy by spending on the solution as opposed to continuing to manufacture the problem. As long as populations are purposely kept ignorant of the options, gov’ts will continue doing what’s in their best interests to funnel funds towards themselves and their hangers on.

SJW Globalists like Merkel hate Christian resistance to their authoritarian rule. The NordStream 2 pipeline would be weaponized for for German economic aggression. Christian European countries, like Poland, would immediately suffer cuts in transit fees for shipping Russian gas. And, perhaps worse, lose political leverage against SJW extremism.

Emboldening Merkel’s senseless aggression towards Germany’s neighbors, seems like an unwise choice for Putin. Perhaps his goal is to intentionally create a crisis that will blow up the EU. It could work, but it is not Putin’s normal modus operandi.

There are ~14,000,000 Jews on the planet. Of these, how many are:

    • Elite Bolsheviks?
    • Elite Oligarchs?
    • Elite Media Owners?

A likely over estimate would be 1,400 = 0.01% of the population. Blaming any group for the actions of the 0.01% Elites is irrational.

Non-observant Elites need to be considered separately. Many of them are apostates that have abandoned the faith of their forefathers.

Russian military plane was accidentally shot down by Russia’s Syrian allies because an Israeli jet was shadowing it. Nineteen Russians were killed — yet you are telling me that Russians in Syria are in cahoots with Israeli Jews

Turkey intentionally shot down a Russian fighter. Russia is now selling the S-400 system to Turkey. The Russian tradition of Realpolitik is quite strong if it can separate Erdogan’s deliberate killing of Russians.

The concept of “Shadowing” was added to the story to allow Syria to save face. The country has about 100 miles of coast and jets can travel 400-600 mi/hr. Every plane is within ~10 minutes of shadowing every other plane. Also, to avoid Iran/Ukraine style “incidents”, military planners on both sides try to avoid running military flights along civilian air corridors.

It is 100% proven than Israel and Russia cooperate for “deconfliction” and accident avoidance: (1)

In the military dimension, particularly with regard to Syria, there is continuous coordination between Israeli and Russian armed forces on a number of levels, as has been the case for several years

This coordination is exemplified by the deconfliction line aimed at preserving the countries’ interests in regard to Israeli operations in Syria. Russian-speaking officers occupy both ends of the line.

Russia and Israel both have an interest in avoiding confrontation, even a tactical one, between Israeli and Russian forces, in addition to any clashes between the Israel Defense Forces and Syrian Forces.

The best outcome for Russia would be the exit of all other national & proxy forces. Again, Realpolitik suggests that Russia would share targeting information if it is in their national interest.

Following Spengler one can easily conclude that the US is the nucleus of a Western Empire which is essentially coterminous with US influence. That is the EU, North and South America, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. This collection of states in the coming decades will continue to become more interdependent.

The North Stream 2 pipeline is an irritant but not a major one for the present. This pipeline and things like it will continue to be irritants as the Western Empire continues to define itself. The Western Empire does still have ambitions to become a planetary empire. This will be evident in continuing confrontations with Russia and China.

Should the Western Empire fail to swallow Russia and China then one must expect a hardening of borders between the Western Empire and the Rest. There could come a time when the cross border trade of the Western Empire will be reduced and pipelines eliminated. At present it is perfectly reasonable that the US will not leave Europe and the pipeline will survive and live indefinitely.

Nevertheless, the struggle to determine if the Western Empire will be a planetary empire shall continue and, quite possibly, for several more decades.

The latter maintained the starvation blockade for over a year AFTER the war was over.

Misleading. The armistice occurred on 11 November 1918, but that was only a temporary ceasefire pending successful peace negotiations that happened 8 months later with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles of 28 June 1919. During the intervening period both sides were prepared for the ceasefire to collapse and for the war to restart.

Even though there was a risk that fighting might restart, in December 1918 (ie only a couple of weeks after armistice) Britain offered to allow German merchant ships to pass through the blockade on condition that they first surrender themselves to a British port and their cargoes monitored to ensure no war materiel was being smuggled across the blockade.

Germany declined to surrender its merchant fleet because if the war restarted they did not want their fleet impounded in British ports, sunk mid-route or trapped in German ports. Germany only changed that policy in March 1919, and within a couple of weeks German merchant ships carrying some 250,000 tons of food had arrived in Germany.

The attack on China is the more deranged, Russia still being sort of White and European, but the Sinophobia is starting to reek of genocidal intent. They seem to really think that they can do an Iraq or Korea on China, which is demented, but because NO dissent is permitted in the totalitarian West, and the robopaths are competing to appear the most belligerent, lest they be suspected of being a ChiCommSymp, or are denounced as such by a rival or a rival’s dupe(s), the hysteria grows by the hour. My old college in London, Imperial, has added an extra year to the civil engineering course that I took. It is all about “environment”. I get regular emails from them that extol the fact that they are on board the “renewable energy” nonsense. What is going on is really shameful. I am certain that the UK will become a 3rd world nation in no time at all. All the pension promises will disappear.

Here is an Imperial College study that Forbes has supported. No mention of subsidies – direct and indirect are mentioned in this piece of trash.

Renewable energy investments are delivering massively better returns than fossil fuels in the U.S., the U.K. and Europe, but despite this the total volume of investment is still nowhere near that required to mitigate climate change.

Those are some of the findings of new research released today by Imperial College London and the International Energy Agency, which analyzed stock market data to determine the rate of return on energy investments over a five- and 10-year period.

The study found renewables investments in Germany and France yielded returns of 178.2% over a five year period, compared with -20.7% for fossil fuel investments. In the U.K., also over five years, investments in green energy generated returns of 75.4% compared to just 8.8% for fossil fuels. In the U.S., renewables yielded 200.3% returns versus 97.2% for fossil fuels.

Just How Good An Investment Is Renewable Energy? New Study Reveals All

Though in the interest of historic accuracy, we should remember that before Teddy Roosevelt, the USA was pretty content to limit her influence to the Americas. The sick megalomaniac Teddy Roosevelt pushed the American nation into an imperial drive by fighting the Spaniards and his imperial project was continued by the worst traitor to the American nation, the despicable puppet of Zionism, Woodrow Wilson ( may his soul rot in hell) along with the distant relative of TR, FDR whose premeditated involvement in WWII set the MIC rolling without any possibility of control by the political leadership.

If Putin doesn’t move militarily at that point, it’ll be Nagorno-Karabakh 2 (where Turkish support/drones was crucial) and a demoralising (most of the Donbass is Russian speaking) setback for Russia.

If he defends the Donbass then prepare for Iran-style sanctions* and goodbye NS2, unless Merkel finds astonishing testicular fortitude and pushes back against the US – whether EU support would be forthcoming is moot. Alas in such a situation Poland would probably side with the US.

“ when it was tbe Huguenots who were the Dreyfusards when the Romish priesthood of France was unanimously Anti-Dreyfus”

You have to take the two sides of story of Dreyfus. When Dreyfus was implicated by the French government, there was ample evidence to base the prosecutor’s case but alas, Dreyfus was from a very rich and well connected family. The legal system struggled to indict him and when he was declared guilty the whole judicial affair came under fire from the Jews and their traditional allies in France the Huguenots. Just compare this scenario with that of Leo Frank and you would see the parallels. This was a concerted effort to establish the principle of separation of state and church of which the prime beneficiaries were the Jews and the Huguenots. Things are rarely black and white.

  83. @Joe Levantine

Why is Joe Levantine such a horrible person? Why does he write such vicious stuff?

Okay, you don’t know why you are so horrible. I do, you don’t. But to take up objectively the demonstrable innocence of Dreyfus let me quote from the book “The Dreyfus Affair” by Piers Paul Read, p. 180.

Then, on 7 November, a fortuitous occurrence altered the course of events. Jacques de Castro, a Parisian stockbroker of South American origin, walking down a Parisian boulevard, stopped to look at the enlarged photograph of the bordereau which appeared on one of the posters put up by Mathieu Dreyfus. Castro recognised the handwriting: it was that of one of his former clients, Commandant Esterhazy. … Castro arranged to see Mathieu Dreyfus. He brought with him some of the letters he had received from Esterhazy. The hand of the letters and that of the bordereau were identical.

Just one bit of your vicious nonsense, Joe Levantine. But you get worse. Why, again, do you lot accuse the Protestants of being in league with the Jews?

The reason is that both reject Papal rule. The Pope pretends to be the vicar of God so all Protestants and all Jews owe him allegiance. God has demanded it. But they both reject that diabolical nonsense so they are grouped together in these endless vicious attacks.

Largely boils down to the horrible Jesuitical indoctrination you suffered as a little child, too little to question it. That’s what made you so evil.

Well, I am taken aback by your response especially that I have often agreed and enjoyed your comments which gave me the impression that you are a person of decency and who is very much revolted by the events that are playing in favour of the NWO.

In my parochial school (Catholic but not Jesuit) we were taught about the Dreyfus affair by our left leaning French literature teacher as a non disputable event that discredited the Catholic Church in France because the latter had conspired against justice. We were also taught that the Reichstag fire was a Hitlerian conspiracy and that six million Jews were gassed with their bodies burnt into ovens. We were also taught about the French Revolution being a God sent event for the liberation of mankind and the universal declaration of human rights… So much indoctrination that I had to re-educate myself pretty much from scratch in mid age after seeing the contrast between the notions drilled in our head and the events that I survived in one of the most tumultuous regions of the world plus having traveled and lived in North America, Europe, the Middle East and East Asia, and I learnt to keep an open mind. My first review of the Dreyfus affair came from a long scholarly article written many years back on UR or some other credible site, were ample evidence was produced to negate the idea that there was a deliberate attempt by the French authorities to frame Capitaine Dreyfus. The author never implied that Dreyfus was guilty as charged, only that the prosecution had credible evidence beyond reasonable doubt. And here all I am trying to do by drawing your attention to the Leo Frank affair is that justice could be wrong on the prosecution as well as the defence side.

As for your accusation that I am a Papist, if you are well acquainted with my comments, you should have noticed that I have often recommended the books of Michael Hoffman who is the most objective critic of the Vatican ( The Occult Renaissance Church of Rome) and that should be enough to prove that your judgement about myself is highly subjective. You notice also that I only recommended that you read a book by the Catholic Scholar E Michael Jones and I did not pronounce any opinion about Protestantism or Puritanism. Just for your knowledge, I have many times expressed my admiration to Martin Luther on the UR whom I have considered as a hero for standing up to the corruption of the Catholic Church. Though with my tradition of seeking objectivity with respect to history, I say without reserve that Luther’s good intentions were never meant to see the Christian Church disintegrate into so many denominations courtesy of his ‘Sola Scriptura. ‘ And if you are a Protestant please try to justify to me Luther’s book that is hardly promoted by most Protestant scholars “ On The Jews And Their Lies”.

I don’t know who of us is more brainwashed. There are many Judaizers in the Roman Curia as in many Protestant denominations. I am sure you have heard of Vatican II which declares Jews as dispensed from the salvation of our Redeemer because they are the progeny of Abraham ( when most of them have nothing to do with Abraham since Ashkenazi Jews are Khazars who came from the Asian steppes) and where Christians are urged not to engage in anti-semitism while there is no mention of Jewish anti-goyism. Or maybe you have heard about Pope Leo X giving the permission to the Jews to mass print the Talmud after the prohibition on this book was about to make it extinct. Or you maybe you have heard about the decision of the ‘Saint John Paul II’ to ban any publication of the writing of Saint Vincent Ferrer who was the most successful preacher of Christianity to Jews whom many ended up converting to Christianity or the same pope talking about ‘our elders in the faith’ meaning the Jews who assert that Jesus is burning in boiling excrements in hell and that his mother is a whore. Or maybe you have heard of the excommunication of Bishop Richard Williamson for daring to throw doubt about the holocaust tale. The list is too long to mention on this site.

And BTW, popes have claimed, unjustly, that they are the vicars of Christ and not the vicars of God. And if you could give me proof and/or sources of popes demanding allegiance from the Jews for I have never heard of it.

It’s one of the great lies of the pandemic. Australia hasn’t really closed its international border at all. It’s left it ajar so sportspeople, film stars, politicians and others willing to pay exorbitant fares for seats can still squeeze through.

Australia border closures: The international border isn’t really closed and we’re all paying a price

Australia’s borders are closed. The only people who can travel to Australia are:

    Australian citizens
    residents
    immediate family members
travellers who have been in New Zealand for the previous 14 days.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) advice for international travellers

As I think you can now see, they have made it very difficult for people to leave or return to Australia. The writer above is clearly lying when he pretends that it is normal that only the wealthy can travel. This is absolute tyranny. Sooner or later, the virus will enter Australia and there is no escaping that reality – unless they keep the country locked up forever.

Ha ha ha, one of the most ridiculous comments I have ever seen at UR.

(Even if the notion had some merit, looks like the EverGiven has already done the job already!)

It may be “intolerable,” but my money is on its being completed this summer.

The Greens’ support of the idea that Ukraine has some kind of “right” to have Russian gas pass through their country (ho ho ho) is a tell right there that they are woring with the Biden faction. The Biden Clan of course has interests in the Ukrainian gas sector.

Avoiding sending gas through the Ukraine is one of the biggest reasons for the Russians to build NS 2 in the first place!! Its the Ukrainians’ own damn fault for screwing up the gas relationship with Russia and letting themselves become pawns of the EU in order to mess with Russia’s gas exports to Europe. Long-term (20 to 30 years) contracts with one supplier are the cheapest way to get a reliable supply of gas. Not going around helter skelter buying from one supplier one day and from another the next trying. Ensuring a continent’s gas supply is not comparing prices on Amazon for pair of boots.
    Jeez.

So the idea that NS 2 shouldn’t be completed because it might harm Ukraine is a horse that left the barn over a decade ago. It sounds pathetic for the Americans—and the Greens—to ring this alarm now. Especially after the Maidan!

Here are the main investors in NS 2; I don’t think they will be too happy if Germany slams the door in their faces (from Wiki):
“Shareholders of the company are the Russian gas company Gazprom (51% of shares), German companies Wintershall Dea and PEG Infrastruktur AG (E.ON) (both 15.5%), the Dutch gas company Gasunie (9%), and the French gas company Engie (9%).[19][29]”

Companies that have already worked or are working or will be working on the project and hence presumably are targets of American sanction rattling include
    Saipem
    Intec Engineering
    Allseas
    Royal Boskalis Westminster
    Tideway
    EUROPIPE
    OMK
    Sumitomo
    EUPEC PipeCoatings S.A
    Rolls-Royce plc
    Dresser-Rand Group
    Siirtec Nigi SPA
    Blue Water Shipping

    Plus various subcontractors, etc.

Per Wiki Allseas has already caved in to threats in 2019, but construction continued.

Hate to tell you, but water vapour IS a greenhouse gas. Luckily it precipitates out quickly. I agree with burning coal, because it hastens humanity’s end, and nukes, because the more nukes built, the more there will be to melt down when civilization collapses. But I’m an alien lizard, and I prefer it hotter.

Do you have any statistics on priestly paedophilia in ‘Christian’ Poland? I believe it is widespread, as usual, undoubtedly due to ancient custom and Wojtyla turning a blind eye to his colleagues proclivities.

The ‘dhimmi’ NYT???!! You need URGENT psychiatric intervention, 123. Do not delay!

Can’t reply in detail at the moment, Joe. Just a quick apology. I attack you and you reply with courtesy and kindness. Thanks.

    @but an humble craftsman

What were they? That the Soviet Union would control eastern Europe, and pose a major threat to the Western World?
That soon after WWII the USA decided to permit the nasty Germans to rearm because no one else in the western world was thought to be able to take on the Soviets with a reasonable chance of success?
Or, that 50 odd years after armistice Germany is the largest exporting nation on the planet??? Agreed that this rank is now held by the Chinese but c’mon, 1,400,000,000 people vs 82,000,000? To say nothing about the USA with 330,000,000 or so population?
Bear in mind the both WWI and WWII were fought by the stupid Brits in order to knock out German competition in foreign markets. As a British politician was quoted by an American diplomat when he told the Brit that they would just have to do better: That worthy lamented that is would probably be cheaper to wage war against Germany than for Britain to improve its international competitiveness. Famous last words indeed.
