You mention the Ploesti oil fields. My father’s brother was a young pilot who participated in the US bombing raid on those oil fields.

They told the pilots before they took off that probably half would not return alive. But hey, “Thanks for your service.” My uncle’s plane (“Honkey Tonk Gal”) was shot down and his co-pilot died. My uncle’s leg was badly mangled when the Romanians rescued him in the forest.

A surgeon took his leg below the knee. My uncle said he was told an American doctor probably would have taken it above the knee at that time. By taking it above the knee, he was able to walk with a prosthetic quite well. You wouldn’t even know he had a wooden leg watching him walk.

He was in a POW camp in Romania until the war was over. He said he and his fellow prisoners were treated very well by the Romanians. I have always had a soft spot in my heart for Romanians as a result of the kindness they showed to my uncle.

Mr. Martyanov mentions another sad story from Ukraine that has recently crept into narrative, the 800 or so Ukrainians reported missing in action at Krynki. To recap, Ukrainian marines crossed the Dniper during 2023 offensive and infiltrated a swampy area using rubber ducks, all the time getting hammered by artillery, air force and drones. It dragged on for months and thousands died in misery, I remember the Military Channel had daily reports on it. According to some sources the idea was that the infantry were supposed to be followed by a mechanized next wave, but the river-crossing engineering equipment was spotted and bombed by the Russian air force, so Ukraine just kept sending small teams in rubber ducks, and claimed a propaganda victory, “we crossed the Dniper”:
