Modern warfare is changing and you need more brains than brawn to be a 21st century warrior. There have also been operations where Russians liberated towns without a single casualty while killing off everyone except those who surrendered. So Russians can fight a war without any casualties without having to use proxies like the West does. Then the West complains why they move so slowly, but that is because they are thorough and methodical, and only move over the killing fields when there is nobody left to resist. That is why with a small force they have annihilated several generations of mobilised Ukrainians, and this new younger lot will fare no better.

I don’t see the US pushing for negotiations to end the conflict — only for Ukraine to mobilize very young men (boys, really — few mothers see their 18 y/o sons as men).

I think that Russian conscripts are technically not allowed to fight in Ukraine unless it’s an emergency. I think they are allowed to volunteer for combat duty, but they had to fight in Kursk along with border guards to halt the Ukrainian incursion.

I’ve dated Ukrainian girls who had been married to Russians or whose gfs dated/married Russians. Intermarriage was incredibly common there and in the expat community. Have a relative whose grandparents were both Ukrainian and Russia.

In the U.S., I’ve met people from both groups who would spend all weekend hanging out, eating and drinking and speaking in Russian.

I was frankly surprised when in 2014, the U.S. found Ukrainians who were willing to shell Russian civilians in their little villages and towns in the Donbass. Those Ukrainians are in power in Kiev right now and will remain in power after this war is over.

By 2022 Zelensky was riling up the Russians to the max by co-ordinating with his fellow ethnic Blinken to take Ukraine into NATO. Blinken refused to use diplomacy to defuse tensions and so the Russians invaded Ukraine.

And even then, Svoboda had already distanced itself for years from its more radical past. By now, it gets perhaps 1% of the vote, not enough to be in parliament at all.
