What’s funny is every major US city with a majority black population (Birmingham, Atlanta, New Orleans, Memphis, Washington DC, Newark, etc.) have also erected a fake black middle class via public jobs the private sector cannot replicate.

The cuts fall with marked impact on African Americans such as Mathis. Nearly 21 percent of the nation’s working black adults hold government jobs, as compared to some 17 percent of white workers and 15 percent of Latinos. Public agencies are the single largest employer for black men, and the second most common for black women.
The disproportionate vulnerability of African American employees to the impacts of government budget cuts helps explain why black workers have fared so much worse than other slices of the population since the recession’s end. In May, the unemployment rate among black Americans reached 16.2 percent, up from 15.5 percent a year earlier. By contrast, white unemployment was eight percent, an improvement from the 8.8 percent level of a year earlier.
The loss of government paychecks erodes one of the great equalizing forces at play in the American economy for more than a century. A government job has long offered a pathway for American Americans to sidestep discrimination that has impeded progress in the private sector, where social networks often determine who has a shot at the best jobs, say experts.
The 1987 film Hollywood Shuffle embodies the crucial importance of government work for black families. In one scene, a struggling black actor is reminded by his grandmother that he can always get work at the post office.
“Something similar but maybe less pronounced can be said about a lot of government agencies,” said Philip Rubio, a labor historian at the University of North Carolina A&T State University, who took that movie scene as the title for an academic book on the subject, “There’s Always Work at the Post Office.”
African Americans first gained employment in the postal service in the 1860s, in the wake of the Civil War. Two decades later, the post office began hiring through the civil service exam, creating equal access to jobs and equal pay regardless of race or gender. And civil service protections allowed postal workers to get involved in controversial issues such as the earliest stages of the Civil Rights Movement without risking their jobs.
By 1940, 14 percent of the black middle class worked for the postal service, according to Rubio. In the decades since, other government departments, from housing to public works to sanitation, became major employers.
But now, with the broader economy stuck in a deep rut and working opportunities chronically lean, those government jobs are diminishing, too.
“Many of the black people you don’t hear about on the news, the black people who own homes, who can afford to send their children to college and have modest savings, many of them worked for some branch of government before the recession began,” said Steven Pitts, a labor economist at the University of California, Berkeley’s Center for Labor Research and Education. “There is good reason to be very concerned about what will happen when this work disappears.”

When Francine Verdine took a job as a clerk at the Internal Revenue Service in Houston in 1983, it was supposed to be a stopgap until something better came along. She didn’t expect that 42 years later, she would look back on it as the start of a rewarding career that provided growth in various management positions, upward mobility and the opportunity to build a comfortable life for her family.
“I enjoyed my career,” said Verdine, who retired in 2019. “I had no idea when I started that I could make the money I did by the time I left. It’s sad that many others’ opportunity to have a similar career could be over.”
For decades, the federal government provided both reliable jobs and guardrails to offset systemic racial bias in hiring and promotions, offering an alternative for Black workers who might be overlooked or ignored in the private sector. They played a crucial role in helping Black workers like Verdine join the middle class and thrive. But vast cuts by the Trump administration, led by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, are threatening to close down that once-dependable path to financial stability.
The government, which has about 3 million employees, is the largest employer in the country. At least 75,000 of them accepted buyout offers and thousands were fired in the last several weeks. Many of the workers fired were either newer hires or told they were let go for subpar performance.
“The federal workforce was a means to help build Black middle class. It hired Black Americans at a higher rate than private employers,” said Sheria Smith, president of the American Federation of Government Employees Local 252, which represents the Education Department employees.
As a part of his efforts, President Trump is angling to shut down the Department of Education, a move that will have dramatic repercussions around the country. Nearly 30% of Education employees are Black according to a 2024 report by the department.
Smith said 74 workers at the department had been let go so far, 60 of whom are Black.
At the Department of Health and Human Services, where more than 1,300 new hires were reportedly laid off, 20% of the staff was Black. And at the Department of Veterans Affairs, which recently lost 1,000 employees, 24% are Black.
ORDER IT NOWThese numbers illustrate how important government jobs have been and are for Black people, said Marcus Casey, a fellow in the Economic Studies program at the Brookings Institution. He said the administration’s efforts are trying to undermine the gains of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which banned discrimination on the basis of race and other characteristics, and of affirmative action, which began in the federal government to make the hiring and promoting process more inclusive.
“Whether it was from the post office, through direct growth of federal agencies, through the military — the government fought against the headwinds associated with the private sector,” said Casey, an affiliated scholar with Brookings’ Future of Middle Class Initiative.
Many Black people could build careers through the federal government typically because the private sector overlooked them, regardless of their qualifications, he said. “And so, the federal government has been essential to the building of the Black middle class.”
A worker at the Department of Transportation in Washington, D.C, who requested anonymity for fear of being fired, said several workers in his office have been fired for “poor performance.”
“Morale is so low,” he said. “People who should be there are gone. Everyone is nervous about the next shoe dropping.”
He said he has 16 years on the job and was planning to retire in four. “I wanted to do an even 20, maybe even 25. But I have to be honest with myself now: I don’t think I’m going to make it. Every indicator is that my head will be chopped off sooner or later. How can anyone be productive with that hanging over you?”
This disproportionate nature in which black individuals collectively make up such large percentages of the federal workforce and the relatively unimportance of most of these jobs (this also includes individuals of every race employed by the federal government) is thankfully being addressed by President Trump and his ally, Elon Musk. The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was always going to have to address Black-Run America if we were going to accountability restored, and some semblance of sanity brought back first to Washington D.C., and then trickle down to municipalities across the land.
And it’s actually happening.

This really truly warms the cockles of my heart. Having been bullied, menaced then lied about by my black Panamanian coke head and Jehovah Witness supervisor, in a civil service job. I know first hand the big nothing that blacks do in civil service, break all the rules like don’t use the copy machine or paper for personal use, don’t come in late, don’t take off four days in a row, , don’t put your case load in your desk to hide the work, don’t talk on your phone at work. the Shop Steward who had to step down years previous for stealing union dues, copied announcements for her travel service and church business even when there was no paper to print our daily reports on. Despite her morbid obesity, she always had large dishes and bags of candy set out for the rank and file. she took up a lot of room in the kitchen and time, putting together her bullet mixer for her shakes. This way she worked even less. I would guess she did zero work all day long.
My black supervisors and co workers were malicious, petty, rude and unprofessional. their hatred of whites was always present, obvious They would chortle with glee when the coke head Jehovah Witness would scream at me, a violation of civil service code. She told my co workers to not answer my questions and I was denied any overtime even though she said in a meeting there was plenty of over time for any one who wanted it, just not me, a white person.
the other strange thing about these lazy black women, they were terrified that at any minute the funding would dry up and they would be fired. Guess this is their dream come true. Wish DOGE would be enacted at the state and city levels. One Jehovah Witness, would march around with her headset on talking about her church business at high volume. It’s interesting that Europe doesn’t roll out the red carpet for the poor oppressed minorities of North America. After their experience with American GIs in their neighborhoods, they don’t want any of the oppressed American Civilians coming in.
I’d say this goes a long way in explaining how worthless, corrupt and fraud riddled the US government is. One can hardly expect anything else when massive numbers of “workers” are hired, not due to competence, but to the color of their skin, among others. Cut that meat to the bone, DOGE boys…
This is a point that most people do not understand. While there is a tiny percentage of blacks that can compete without special advantages in private sector jobs or even government jobs, a substantial portion of middle class and up blacks are in government positions where their laziness or incompetence is sheltered. It is just another form of welfare for them. But I will also say, there are blacks in many large corporations that are also sheltered in the same way because these companies love to tout the fact they have blacks in important positions even though they are anything but productive.

Government jobs were turned into affirmative action jobs programs for the lazy, uneducated or undereducated, American black population, as it was the only real way to get them working and paid decent wages, because their skills alone wouldn’t cut it.

In response to the comment, I have friends/family that work for the government and they’ve said numerous times it’s almost impossible to get fired. That’s why I’m so in awe at what DOGE’s doing and their ability to fire thousands at a time. I’m just afraid 4 years isn’t enough for real transformation and the remaining part of the cancer will start to metastasis again after Trump.
Having said that, it’s the first time in quite a while I’ve felt optimistic about our country. I still think that based on demographics alone that this is simply allowing us a bit longer to prepare, but it gives hope that one man can indeed change the trajectory of history.

Cleaning out the dead weight blacks from every position they hold will be a godsend. We had a black postal worker who would stuff all the mail for the dead-end street I live on in the first mailbox she came to. Numerous complaints about her lazy ass were made and we found out she was doing that on every route she’d ever worked. They’d just shift her to another area when the complaints became too numerous since they couldn’t fire her.
As for the Department of Education, let’s all remember the stories out of New York where minority teachers couldn’t even pass the exams for the classes they were supposed to be teaching. Threatened with termination, they began screeching that it was “racist.”
Let’s also remember the stories where black applicants were too damn stupid to pass the tests to become firefighters or policemen- so, the tests were dumbed down so they could “pass” after they sued and said the tests were “racist.”

At lunch today, a friend said he sent a $60 Macy’s gift card to a colleague. It somehow disappeared. I work for a financial services firm. Several times a day, I get complaints from customers who state they sent in their payments more than 10 days ago and it’s not yet received; important correspondence sent has disappeared. A lot of the senders are elderly and others who aren’t tech savvy. I do everything I can do to dissuade our customers from using the USPS.

What I have been mulling is how does this impact the Obama Presidential Center under construction in Chicago.
Intital budget around $470M and today coming in at $800M.
Tagged to it right now is a $40M discrimination law suit filed by the rebar/concrete subcontractor. The center is suppose to open in the summer of 2026.

The Atlanta school cheating scandal involved 44 out of 56 schools. Numerous “educators” took plea deals when the cheating was discovered. Twelve refused and went to trial. Wikipedia has a good article on it. What triggered the investigation was the sudden and massive increase in high grades on mandated tests.

I have relatives who live in a very well to do town on Long Island. My grandparents and other relatives would send Christmas and birthday cards with checks or usually cash in them to my cousins and for about 6 months they weren’t getting them. Turns out a lot of people in the neighborhood weren’t getting birthday or holiday cards, thanks to the friendly dindu mailman who was stealing them, and had sacks of mail he didn’t feel like delivering sitting in his basement, when he finally got caught.
This was in the mid-90s pre-internet when mail and correspondence was actually important. Imagine all the missed opportunities or penalties incurred to those people because their mailman was a lazy, thieving groid.

He called me saying he had a roommate and would keep my phone number. A couple of days later he called desperate he needed a room mate ASAP. His Polish landlady in a Polish neighborhood objected to his renting a room to a black guy and told him he couldn’t have any black people in the building, she lived on the floor below him.
I got a really decent place, the neighborhood was extremely safe, could walk around 3, 4, 5 am no problems, 24 hours stores open.
I was in that neighborhood today, the landlady is long gone and I know why she insisted on that back then. I don’t blame her one bit.

NY State Unified Court System… A black woman blew the whistle on her black co workers who had been given the answers to the exam questions. I took this test, after a course and studying relentlessly, this is an extremely difficult exam.
BUT, even though the NY State Court System knew who had cheated on the exam the blacks were never fired.
A friend worked with some of them at the Foley Square Courthouse in Manhattan, they flouted the clock in, clock out rules, the break and lunch rules taking two and three hour lunches.
Who is to blame here? At one time this was a really good job but since the agency has been gutted not so anymore.
Was at the post office today. The black woman clerk was her typical rude and unprofessional self, got annoyed with everything. I asked for cash back. They seem to get off on stopping me from getting cash back, she pushed some button before I could put in how much cash I wanted, then accused me of asking for cash back. Typical little black Sambo act.
I am praying that the Post Office gets privatized and there are white people working again at the post office.

In the early 1980s I met a USAF missile officer who said government employees are like missiles. When they don’t work, you can’t fire them.
It was sort of a joke but it was true.
I have seen the “civil-rights” corruption in both the government and private sectors and have endured the incompetence of blacks in both sectors.
Small private businesses generally don’t have that problem as they are “under the radar” due to size) and don’t have the capital to put up with such incompetence. Thankfully, they are largely not subject to racial “quotas” (which DO exist), despite denials to the contrary.
Governments and large corporate entities have been playing the “civil-rights” shuffle for a very long time. When an unlimited number of shekels are available, it is easy to create “do-nothing” positions as “place holders” to comply with existing civil-rights quotas (which are not supposed to exist).
Positions are created (by government mandates affecting large corporations) for substandard, incompetent blacks who are given job titles just to keep them occupied.
A black supervisor will have his or her competent (White or Asian) subordinates do the REAL work while he or she makes plans for the weekend or does her nails on “company time” without fear of repercussions for “unworklike behavior”.
Add to that the public sector “unions” (which should not exist) which are predominantly run by blacks offer additional “protections” against being censured or fired for incompetence.
Those days are coming to an end. You will see massive “chimp-outs” and other negative behaviors by our “civil-rights” recipients.
Abraham Lincoln had the right idea–repatriate our “useless farm machinery” back to their original African habitat. We would have been much better off…
A good example of black incompetence is that of ESKOM, South Africa’s electricity provider.
Once, a world-renowned and recognized top performing electrical utility, it has been relegated to third-world status because the competent white engineers and technicians have been replaced with substandard blacks who could not run a shoe shine stand, let alone a major utility.
Affirmative action, known as BEE (Black Economic Empowerment) has been used to push out competent white engineers and technicians in favor of incompetent blacks. Sound familiar?
South African utility customers are lucky if they have electrical power for 4 hours per day. In white areas, generators are commonly used to maintain electrical power when the utility goes down.
Another good example of black incompetence is that of land redistribution which stole land from productive white farmers and awarded fully functioning farms to blacks. The first thing these blacks did was to dismantle and sell the farm machinery for scrap, were unable to plant and harvest anything, and in general ruined perfectly good crop-producing farms.

I worked over the years with FedGov people, including two stints of a few years each working in a federal office alongside them as a civilian contractor who worked for a private company.
Federal workplaces are soul-deadening hellscapes. A good 2/3rds of the present day Fed workforce is beyond worthless. Of the remaining 1/3rd, most are mediocre or average. At least those people aren’t terrible. I guess that’s a plus.
Maybe 10-15% of the total workforce are good or better than good.
I worked in IT, and happened to deal with few groids–rest assured, they are worthless there, too. There are horror stories I’ve heard about nigro misbehavior. I guess I was lucky–hell, most of the White “Simple Servants” were bad enough.

Every time I mail a card that never gets through to the recipient that’s EXACTLY what I think happened to it. I remember, back when I was a kid, that I’d get cards from my grandma, who lived in another state, that actually had cash in them. But that was 50+ years ago when, I’m guessing, the postal service was still mostly white. Most people now know to never mail cash or gift cards because the thieving shitbirds will steal them.

Anyone who wants to see black stupidity, laziness and incompetence at its finest should only have to deal with the VA. I ‘m a disabled veteran, so some of my treatment is at the VA. I’ve experienced black employees screw up tests, flub appointment times, and just generally not do their jobs properly. Also, as soneone who has worked in the private sector, I have seen many examples of their incompetence overall. It’s way past time to get rid of deadwood people in the government and other places. Thirty years ago, I would have been opposed to some form of separation from blacks. But, after seeing too much of their incompetence and dysfunctional behavior, I have to agree that the segregationists were right.

Working for a major municipality, I had a major discrepancy with one of my paychecks.
In my case, filling out the required form to request an adjustment was an exercise in futility.
First, the form got “lost” so I filled out another form and submitted it.
The “clerk” gave me the third degree by questioning “are you SURE you had a pay discrepancy?”
They claimed to check on it, but nothing was ever done. After multiple runs-around by the black clerk staff, once again, I still attempted to resolve the issue.
I got “lucky” when I went to payroll when the hired staff was out to lunch.
A pleasant (dot) Indian accountant who was “minding the store” when the black payroll crew was “out to lunch” checked into my situation and issued me a check on the spot.
I surmised that the black payroll crew took a look at my obviously ethnic surname and decided not to “help the white boy (m-fer) out”.
Talk about “racism”…

I have met a lot of white South African refugees over the years. I know older ones who were quality architects/engineers/builders/finish carpenters, who took their families and left in the early 90s when they saw the writing on the wall.
The others are younger who were teenagers growing up on farms when Apartheid ended, and their parents sent them to college or to live with relatives in other countries like England, Australia, or the US. One guy I know was 12-13 in 94 and told me stories about everyone, including him going to bed with loaded pistols or rifles next to their beds because they lived in a rural area.
A lot of the younger South Africans I’ve met get jobs in yachting as deckhands or stews, because it gives them the opportunity to get out of the country, but they still go back to visit family from time to time.
The one common thing they all tell me is how beautiful of a country SA is, was, and how angry they are to have to leave, give up their birthright homeland, and moving back to raise a family.

The statement “South African utility customers are lucky if they have electrical power for four hours per day” exaggerates the situation broadly. You get that in Syria or Congo. Not, so far, in South Africa.
The worst we have had in planned outages or “load shedding” is stage six where Eskom gives us 12 hours a day of electricity, staggered, so if you leave your freezer closed the meat and fish won’t spoil. Stage six was thankfully rare but we got a lot of stage two, three, and four.
However, we had three days of unplanned outage in Eersterivier two years ago. The newspapers didn’t report it. Food spoiled, and poor people had to dress for work in the dark and cold.
The big shopping malls and supermarket chains have diesel generators, though I heard that Checkers (a supermarket) had to send refrigerated trucks to rescue the meat in Swellendam, taking it to refrigerated warehouses.
