The major organizations that comprise the Israel Lobby are well known: the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), the American Jewish Committee (AJC), the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations and Christians United For Israel (CUFI). All are well known, benefiting from large budgets and staffs. They are extremely effective, having excellent access to politicians and the media to promote their points of view, and are, as a group, regular visitors to the White House. AIPAC is without doubt the most powerful lobby in the United States that is focused on a foreign policy issue.
The institutional Israel boosters are in turn backed by a cluster of think tanks and institutes that spout a relentlessly pro-Likud line. They include Foundation for Defense of Democracies, The Emergency Committee for Israel, The American Enterprise Institute, The Hudson Institute, Brookings and The Washington Institute for Near East Policy. A recent op-ed at The National Interest (formerly the Nixon Center) “Why Israel Fears Containment of a Nuclear Iran,” written by two Israelis with government ties, illustrates to what extent spokesmen for Tel Aviv have access to the media across the political spectrum to make their points while contrary views rarely surface. It would be difficult to imagine a similar piece appearing advancing Iranian views on Israel, for example, and one might well question whose “National Interest” is being promoted by providing a platform to current or former foreign government officials.
And backing the think tanks up are the enablers in the media who suppress stories critical of Israel and consistently editorialize supporting policies favored by Tel Aviv. Israeli Ambassadors, uniquely, regularly write op-eds for publications like the Washington Post and The New York Times. Prominent among the consistently pro-Israel media are the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Rupert Murdoch publications in general and magazines like Mortimer Zuckerman owned US News and World Report, but it would be fair to say that nearly all mainstream media outlets are to some extent wary of offending Israel and its backers.
But as Professors John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt noted in their groundbreaking expose of the Israel Lobby, the lobbying effort extends well beyond the organizational level to include friends of Israel who labor assiduously and voluntarily at state and local levels as well as at universities and from within professional organizations to maintain a positive viewpoint on Israel while promoting a negative narrative regarding its increasing number of critics. Most recently they have been focused on halting the growth of BDS, “boycott, divestment, and sanctions,” particularly in attempts to use “Lawfare” to make such activity illegal when it singles out Israel.
Israel’s friends quite rightly see Congress as their major ally in keeping the United States Israel-friendly, so much so that Pat Buchanan once dubbed America’s legislative body as “Israeli occupied territory.” And so it remains with legislation favorable to Israel passing by unanimous consent voice votes or grossly lopsided margins when a tally actually takes place. The White House too is into the charade that Israel is a major US ally and friend, in spite of mounting evidence that Tel Aviv consistently spies on Washington, is not interested in any peace process with the Palestinians and works against genuine American interests.
I have recently obtained a handout memo relating to a congressional race in Virginia that illustrates how the process works at the political entry level. Congressman Jim Moran has announced that he will not seek reelection in the heavily Democratic district that encompasses Alexandria Virginia. Moran has fallen afoul of the pro-Israel establishment by telling attendees at a 2003 antiwar forum, “If it were not for the strong support of the Jewish community for this war with Iraq, we would not be doing this.” He added that Jewish leaders were “influential enough” to change the course of US policy. Moran inevitably apologized for those remarks, but the damage was done and he was considered to be unreliable on the issue of Israel, a view reflected in the handout which quotes Debbie Linick, Director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington, asserting that Moran had been “lacking the nuances of understanding the peace process. It is crucial that the next representative from the 8th District be a strong supporter of Israel.”
The handout described a Jewish Community Relations Council Political Forum for the 8th District that was to be held on May 18th in Alexandria at the Council’s Early Childhood Learning Center. All prospective candidates for the 8th District were invited to participate to present their positions on various issues of interest to those attending. The access to the event was by paid tickets only, presumably to permit screening to control the make-up of the audience. The handout again quotes Linick as stating that “all area synagogues will be asked to participate” even if they were not in the voting district.
The memo suggests that someone at the forum might ask every candidate to publish his or her signed Israel Position paper, which AIPAC “requires” all candidates for office to personally sign. It also recommends that signs be placed on the street outside demanding release of the paper and notes that if there should happen to be demonstrators present they will not be allowed to block the entrance, which is behind the building on private property.
The Northern Virginia Council might well be more than usually politically active and is unlikely to have a counterpart in most congressional districts, but the handout reveals how AIPAC has an impact on all viable congressional candidates, often before they are even nominated. Once nominated, candidates go through a vetting process in which they meet with an AIPAC official and are asked to write and sign a position paper on Israel, if they have not already done so. Many of the papers are subsequently highlighted on the AIPAC website.
Few if any candidates refuse to cooperate because to do so would mean that AIPAC and its friends would find and fund an opponent and use their media access to distort the politician’s record. This type of blackballing most recently occurred in the case of Congressman Walter Jones of North Carolina, who was on the receiving end of a vicious and well-funded campaign because he is an anti-war candidate strongly opposed by the pro-Israel establishment.
To be sure Americans have a constitutional right to both demand to know and challenge the views of those running for office but the important thing to note here is that the discussion is not about healthcare, immigration or government programs – it is rather about unconditional support for the policies of a foreign country. I can think of no other advocacy group in the United States that is comparable to the Israel Lobby in terms of its promotion of positions that are demonstrably not beneficial to the United States with the only possible exception being the prominent Cubans in Congress who vet candidates based on their willingness to continue to punish the regime in Havana. The Cubans, unlike the Israel Firsters, have, however, only regional impact, mostly concentrated in Florida, though it is interesting note that they – Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Mario Diaz-Balart, Joe Garcia and Robert Menendez – are also all passionate supporters of Israel.
Americans really have little choice when it comes to Congress and Israel as anyone who refuses to cooperate with AIPAC is unlikely to find himself in the running, but there should at least be some awareness of what happens routinely to prospective candidates to insure conformity with the Lobby’s viewpoint. If unconditional loyalty to a foreign country is a sine qua non for election to congress perhaps there should be some discussion of what that is likely to mean and the promoters of such policies should be held accountable when they produce a bad result, as they did in Iraq and are promising to do vis-a-vis Iran. It is one thing to be all for Israel due to cultural or familial affinity or even as an abstraction but it is quite another to persist in that view when it does genuine harm to the United States, regarding which a case certainly can and has already been made.

The unholy alliance of Evangelicals and Zionists dominates our foreign policy in the Middle East. The first group has fantastic notions from the Books of Revelations and Daniel about the coming war between good and evil. The second group, whose ideology is based on integral nationalism which easily metasthesizes into Fascism, cares nothing about US interests. It is not the first time that groups in American favor anti-American policies in favor of another country; think only of pro-IRA politicians in the Northeast, beginning with Congressman Peter King. But it is time to reject the irrationality of Evangelicals and Zionists and strive for an American foreign policy. Israel should be no more no less important to us than, say, Finland.
We hear constantly of the power of the so-called Jewish Lobby, but no one ever explains how and why the Lobby hac dome to have such power.
If this Lobby weren’t useful to interests that transcend and ultimately have little to do with Jewish/Israeli interests, few politicians would pay the Lobby any mind. Geopolitically, Israel is a useful tool of global elites. If the Israeli government were to make serious peace overtures to the Palestinian factions and if these factions were to respond favorably, any peace effort would be nipped in the bud by those who have a strong interest in keeping these entities from cooperating with one another. Many Israelis know this. In fact, their alternative media shout it from the rooftops.
This article does an excellent job of showing why there is unlikely to be any change in USG policy toward Israel. But when government ignores the best interests of its citizens other steps can be taken. The Lobby can continue to buy our government but I doubt it can stop BDS. Time to shift efforts from the political arena to the market place.

One alternative, within the political arena, is to vote for the Green Party candidate. For example, I — Michael Meo — am the Green Party nominee for the Third District U.S. Congress seat in Oregon. I refused the draft during the Vietnam War and served two years in federal penitentiary. Another interesting factor is the sheer number of “our” representatives in Congress who hold dual Israeli-U.S. citizenship. They number in the hundreds and hold some of the most important positions in our government, from ambassadors to White House presidential advisers. Each one has sworn allegiance to Israel and their voting records reflect that allegiance. Besides the corrupting influence of AIPAC and other Israel-first groups, Israel virtually controls our banking, news media and entertainment industries. Combined with the single goal of promoting and enabling Israel, is it any wonder why America continues to shower an estimated 3.5 billion each year on Israel, which is nothing more or less than an apartheid state busy committing war crimes and crimes against humanity on the Palestinian people. When I was a kid (early ’50s), and the topic of Israel came up in family conversations, my father’s line, variants of which one still hears, was that “israel made the desert bloom.” Did they take land that didn’t belong to them. “Israel made the desert bloom.” Did Rabbis run things? “Israel made the desert bloom.” Until this image of Israel can be dislodged from the American psyche, we’ll attack without a second thought anyone Israel wants us to.
And let’s not forget that in addition to deciding local elections, every four years both presidential candidate are chosen by the Israeli lobby via a weeding out process that begins at the primary level, where all potential “enemies” of Israel are removed from the process. I didn’t see anything in Giraldi’s article claiming that lobbying is illegal. Rather than the article being a joke, you are the joke for suggesting the Lobby isn’t very powerful. These are two distinguished professors from two prestigious academic institutions who have demonstrated the power of the lobby, not members of the KKK.

Yes and as a democracy American citizens have a right to shine a light on how the Lobby is skewing US foreign policy away from US national interests in favour of those of a foreign country. Americans have a right to understand how a Lobby for a foreign country (that should be registered under the Foreign Agents Registration Act) works to undermine US national interests. The latest example being the efforts of the Emergency Committee for Israel spending millions to unseat Walter Jones of NC because of his anti-interventionist and anti-foreign aid positions. Fortunately, most constituents from his district were able to see past the hasbara campaign and re-elect him.
Finally, Americans also have a right to know which Americans are putting Israel’s interests ahead of America’s. They need to know who the Israel Firsters are and fight vigorously against them.

Am I powerful? I have money to give to the preacher to preach on the stret corners . I cn fire him ,rehire him,and he depends on me to get to that corner. The street corner has been won by me for transmission of ideas and staging of events. I know people in the city council. One of them did not support my bid. I got him transferred as part of reorganization by the council. I have donated a lot for the elections of those councilmen. I also sit and dine and pray together with a few other who support my effort and share my political views and share some genes with me .They offer similar services in other parts of the cities . They also keep an eye on the voting patterns and the speeches of these councilmen.They receive donations from all of us. I have influenced the decision of allowing and disallowing certain offices and factories in the cities. The owners of those offices have hired my people in important regulatory positions. Some of the owners happen to dine,pray,and share gene with me and my distant relatives in other cities and actually countries. The French city of Lyon took action against one of their own who wanted to establish business with one of the councilmen in my city who I did not like. I knew a few of those who paid for the election and the salaries of those elected leaders of Lyon.
I asked one of the local TV not to be given the permission to air . We managed by not renewing the license over some rules that were found and interpreted by my folks who fine,pray,and share gene with that of mine. My councilman had an arrangement to get free TV show broadcast to the lounge and one weekly magazine delivered free . People liked it. They got free TV viewing and free magazine. I make sure that behind all the stupidities and irrelevances that are shoved down as news , I get my thoughts,ideas,plans,and suggestions delivered to the people without any oppositite views or scrutiny and be delivered by experts who I declared them to be expert for working at some stage of life in the related fields . I sent some guys to see what kind of books the library have and got some removed . They agreed otherwise they would have lost funding and knew would be given poor performance assessment. I also kept an eye on the local student body for debating the role of the preacher in the street corner and the presence of one TV show in the city hall lounge and the threat to career safety of those questioning me and my friends who dine,pray,and share some genes with me. We successfully brought the charges of indoctrination,incitement,disturbance of peace,and threatening the business of the city.
I tell my next generations how one of my ancestors used the judicial position to make the phone calls to different mayors and get redistrcting and rezoning approved for the exclusive use by me and my friends who dine,pray,and share gene with me .

While the Mearsheimer and Walt study was important, why doesn’t anyone credit or seem to remember Paul Findley’s They to Dare Speak Out: People and Institutions Confront Israel’s Lobby (Westport, Conn.: Lawrence Hill, 1985), ISBN 0-88208-179-9. This was indeed the true seminal work on exposing AIPAC and Israeli influence in the U.S. Congress and government.

Interesting and well written expose Phillip. Just 10 years ago you would not have been able to write this and actually have it published. But it seems more and more there is a loss of control by the Israeli lobby and their speech police.
NY Times reported of the meeting between the leaders of the various Jewish organizations and Rand Paul . The meeting was to clarify some of the concerns the Elders had . Rand Paul was articulating the need to cut back foreign donations and grants . He was not discounting that Israel would also suffer along with say Congo or Egypt. The Elders sought and received the assurances that Israel would be spared. This attitude was already forcefully advocated by Eric Cantor and Schumer – making it bipartisan.
But the importance lies in the Hasabara promoted by the Zionist that Israel did not need the money anymore and should be glad to be removed from the list . These claims are definitely made by a few but have been given wider coverage and been repeated many times . But the actual deals and threat under the radar not been publicized ,nor brought to the American citizen’s awareness leaving the poor American to conclude that America for its own advantages are forcing Israel to receive the money every year . We need the 3rd political party called the “Real America’s Party”, where the membership would reflect proportionately a true ethnicity of our population based on the census percentage of the minorities promoting their views. The minorities may require a few additional divisions, mainly from the Asia, since it is the most populated continent with many conflicting agendas, like Arabs, Jews, Indians, Chinese, Turks and Japanese. On other hand all European nationalities including Portuguese and Spanish are truly whites, representing the same interests and don’t need any divisions. This would guarantee the representation of the real USA, as it meant to be, the Melting Pot America, without the Jewish domination.
The same is necessary for the mass media. To guarantee the Free Speech, Freedom, Justice, Liberty, Equality and Democracy, the Jewish monopoly on public media must be broken, and proportionally licensed to all minority groups.
Day by day, it is becoming evident that the behavior of exclusivist/expansionist/illegal occupier/oppressor/racist Israel is having an increasingly detrimental effect on the geopolitical interests of the U.S. Never have the wise words of George Washington regarding foreign entanglements been more relevant. In his Farewell Address, he admonished his fellow citizens to steer clear of a “passionate attachment” to another nation, as it could create “the illusion of a common interest…where no common interest exists.” Regarding Israel, America will inevitably act upon the wisdom of its founding father. Paul Wolfowitz
Former Deputy Defense Secretary, and member of Perle’s Defense Policy Board, in the Pentagon. Wolfowitz is a close associate of Perle, and reportedly has close ties to the Israeli military. His sister lives in Israel. Wolfowitz came from the Jewish thinktank, JINSA. Wolfowitz was the number two leader within the administration behind the Iraq war. Lawrence (Larry) Franklin
The former Defense Intelligence Agency analyst with expertise in Iranian policy issues who worked in the office of Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Douglas Feith and reported directly to Feith’s deputy, William Luti, was sentenced January 20, 2006, “to more than 12 years in prison for giving classified information to an Israeli diplomat” and members of the pro-Israel lobbying group American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).
Douglas Feith
Under Secretary of Defense and Policy Advisor at the Pentagon. He is a close associate of Perle and served as his Special Counsel. Like Perle and the others, Feith is pro-Israel. He is closely associated with the Zionist Organization of America. Feith runs a small law firm, Feith and Zell, which only has one International office, in Israel. The majority of their legal work is representing Israeli interests. His firm’s own website stated, prior to his appointment, that Feith “represents Israeli Armaments Manufacturer.” Feith also came from the Jewish thinktank JINSA.
Feith was investigated by the FBI under suspicion of leaking classified information to Israel, being that he was Larry Franklin’s boss when Franklin leaked those documents to Rosen and Weissman of AIPAC. For that he was forced to leave the National Security Council. Feith was also investigated by the Senate Intelligence Committee for sexing up ‘intelligence’ that was used to justify invading Iraq.

Kissinger likely had a part in the Watergate crimes, Southeast Asia mass murders (Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos), Installing Chilean mass murdering dictator Pinochet, Operation Condor’s mass killings in South America, and more recently served as Serbia’s Ex-Dictator Slobodan Milosevic’s Advisor. He advocated going to war against Iraq. President Bush nominated Kissinger as chairman of the September 11 investigating commission. He later declined this job under enormous protests.
Dov Zakheim
Zakheim attended Jew’s College in London and became an ordained Orthodox Jewish Rabbi in 1973. He was adjunct professor at New York’s Jewish Yeshiva University.
Dov Zakheim is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and in 2000 a co-author of the Project for the New American Century’s position paper, Rebuilding America’s Defenses, advocating the necessity for a Pearl-Harbor-like incident to mobilize the country into war with its enemies.

On May 6, 2004, Zakheim took a lucrative position at Booz Allen Hamilton, one of the most prestigious strategy consulting firms in the world. One of its clients then was Blessed Relief, a charity said to be a front for Osama bin Laden. Booz, Allen & Hamilton then also worked closely with DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which is the research arm of the Department of Defense.

In 2009 it was revealed that the NSA had secretly taped conversations of Congresswomen Jane Harman negotiating with two AIPAC spies accused of giving sensitive information about US military activities to the Israeli government. This information was secretly revealed by the NSA to Nancy Pelosi prior to the selection of the committee chairman and was a factor in Harmon’s failure to obtain this highly sensitive position. However, the case against the two Israeli lobbyists was dismissed — against the insistance of the FBI. No satisfactory reason has been given for this. Unfortunately, such an act of treason remains unchallenged and Jane Harman remains at her congressional job and enjoys being the third wealthiest member of Congress.
