Years ago, I learned of a black woman, back in the 1920s, who had said, “Slavery is the price I paid for civilization.” Slavery might have been awful for her ancestors, but it got them out of Africa, and that was why she was living in the United States – a civilized country. I made a note of her name: Zora Neale Hurston. I told myself I would find out about her, but I never did.
Now, with blacks appearing actually to believe they deserve millions of dollars just because they’re black, I finally looked her up, and I’m glad I did.
She was a gifted writer and a remarkable woman. She never asked for special treatment, only for a chance to succeed on her own. To the end of her life, even as blacks became more petulant and demanding, she refused to be part of what she called “the sobbing school of Negrohood.”
Zora Neale Hurston was born in 1891 and grew up in one of the first incorporated all-black towns in America, Eatonville, Florida.
Her father was a preacher and was elected mayor. She earned a degree at Howard University, where she began her writing career and co-founded the school newspaper. In 1925, she got a scholarship to Barnard College, the girls’ campus of Columbia University. She studied anthropology under Franz Boaz and worked with Margaret Meade and Ruth Benedict — without joining the “sobbing school of Negrohood.”
She did fieldwork in anthropology and, as part of what is called the Harlem Renaissance, wrote novels, short stories, and even plays. Here she is, on the very right, with the cast of a play she wrote, called The Great Day.
She had a lovely writing style and always stood up for women — she was an early feminist — but she didn’t toe the line on race.
Her best known novel, published in 1937, is Their Eyes Were Watching God, which she wrote in seven weeks while she was researching voodoo in Haiti.
Here she is at a book fair right about the time of publication.
In a 2022 article, Reason magazine called the book “a gripping semi-autobiographical portrait of a woman’s odyssey in search of romantic and personal freedom. It is now justly recognized as one of the greatest American novels of the 20th century.”
I wouldn’t go that far, but it has some nice passages. Here’s one: “All gods who receive homage are cruel. All gods dispense suffering without reason. . . . Through indiscriminate suffering men know fear and fear is the most divine emotion. . . . Half-gods are worshipped in wine and flowers. Real gods require blood.”
All the important characters in the book are black, and they speak in Negro dialect, as in: “Two things everybody’s got tuh do fuh theyselves. They got tuh go tuh God, and they got tuh find out about livin’ fuh theyselves.”
There is no “racism” in the novel. In fact, when the heroine kills her lover in self-defense, a sympathetic all-white jury finds her innocent.
All this infuriated blacks. They didn’t care that it was a moving story about human emotions. They thought writing in dialect degraded blacks, and that there was no point to a novel without evil white people. The author Richard Wright wrote that Hurston had “no message, no thought,” and that she was performing for white people in a style that “evokes a piteous smile on the lips of the ‘superior’ race.”
That wasn’t it at all. As she said about an earlier novel, “The story is about Negroes but it could be about anybody. . . . It is the first time that a Negro story has been offered without special pleading. The characters in the story are seen in relation to themselves and not in relation to the whites . . . .”
In 1942, Hurston wrote an autobiography, Dust Tracks on a Road.
The black novelist Maya Angelou, who wrote an introduction, complained that it “does not mention even one unpleasant racial incident.” Scandalous. A black woman with no sob stories.
Which brings us to what Hurston wrote specifically about race. How’s this?
“Certain words and phrases mean one thing to Dixie and something entirely different outside. For example, segregation is interpreted as racial hatred by outsiders but not so in the South, where it merely means separate social activities and connections — not hatred of Negro individuals.”
The line about slavery that first caught my eye is from an essay called “How It Feels to Be Colored Me,” published in 1928.
It’s short and well worth reading. Here are some passages:
“I am not tragically colored. There is no great sorrow dammed up in my soul, nor lurking behind my eyes. I do not mind at all. I do not belong to the sobbing school of Negrohood.”
Here’s another passage:
“Someone is always at my elbow reminding me that I am the granddaughter of slaves. It fails to register depression with me. Slavery is sixty years in the past. The operation was successful, and the patient is doing well, thank you.”
Slavery is now 160 years in the past, and blacks sob about it more than ever. And here is the context of the line about slavery:
“Slavery is the price I paid for civilization, and the choice was not with me. It is a bully adventure and worth all that I have paid through my ancestors for it.” Living in the civilized United States rather than Africa is such a “bully adventure” it’s worth whatever her ancestors may have suffered.
Hurston continued writing into the 1950s, but editors wanted to publish sobbing Negroes, and she refused to sob.
She mocked the way blacks approached whites: “ ‘We were brought here against our will. We were held as slaves for two hundred and forty-six years. We are in no way responsible for anything. We are dependents. We are due something from the labor of our ancestors. Look upon us with pity and give!’ ”
One of the last things Hurston published was only a letter to the editor. It was about the 1954 Brown v Board Supreme Court decision that integrated schools. You wouldn’t have found her in a lovey-dovey photo op on the courthouse steps.
“How much satisfaction can I get from a court order for somebody to associate with me who does not wish me near them?” She asked. “I regard the ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court as insulting.” She mocked “the belief that there is no greater delight to Negroes than the physical association with whites.”
Remarkably, she even saw that the court was brazenly taking power from the people. “A precedent has been established,” she wrote. “Govt by fiat can replace the constitution.” And that is what happened. Even today, how many so-called conservatives would dare call Brown the brutal power-grab it so clearly was?
You can understand why, by the time Hurston died in 1960, she was penniless and forgotten. “I am so put together that I do not have much of a herd instinct,” she wrote. “Or if I must be connected with the flock, let me be the shepherd my own self.”
But I think these are the best lines she ever wrote: “No one on earth ever had a greater chance for glory. . . . It is thrilling to think — to know that for any act of mine, I shall get twice as much praise or twice as much blame.”
What a way to think about being black in the Jim Crow South! She knew that some people might hold her blackness against her, but also that her successes would be twice as sweet. “No one on earth ever had a greater chance for glory.” What a spirited sentiment! A hundred years later, look at today’s blacks: coddled, petted, slobbered over — and they still think they are oh, so oppressed. Hurston would spit on them.
And she was right about “twice the praise.” In an article about her just last year, the New York Times wrote: “her words make it impossible for readers to consider her anything but one of the intellectual giants of the 20th century.” Whew. Let that sink in.
“Despite facing sexism, racism and general ignorance . . . .”
Of course. The Times tells us she was fighting white racists her whole life — except it was black men who insulted her and ran her down. And what’s that about “general ignorance”? Coming from the Times, it makes you laugh, doesn’t it?

You are probably thinking of an interview Ali gave after returning from Africa. A reporter asked him what he thought of it, and he said “Thank God my Grandaddy got on that boat”.
Which goes to show that so much of our experience is storytelling. And the story of blacks could be one of endurance and survival and triumph, and it probably was at one time, but now it’s the story of defeat, injustice and powerlessness. They are prisoners of their own minds because they tell themselves horror stories.
Maybe it was the preponderance of external pressures that eventually tipped the balance. Maybe that external pressure was intentionally designed to tip the balance.

I don’t know if it’s ‘by design’ or not, and likely neither do you, really.
However what I am absolutely certain of is that multiracial egalitarian societies are completely unnatural — they are contrary to the entirety of human evolutionary history, which has been characterized by the struggle of tribes (racially homogeneous linguocultural ethnic groups) to acquire and secure living space — this is why all over the West these unnatural nations are currently devolving into anarcho-tyrannical regimes, which is the only way they can be held together — there are obvious and significant genetic racial differences, and no natural (racial) affinity.

JThere are indeed many respectable blacks , who are capable and decent people and who stand in stark contrast to the degenerate, indolent ,criminal and often drug addicted white trash that are all too obvious in contemporary American society.
For instance, we have a huge welfare class in the United States today. People with their hands out and mouth’s wide open for every taxpayer funded government benefit program ranging from food stamps to Medicaid, section 8, unemployment insurance, workman’s compensation, SSI, defined benefit public pensions and a hundred other welfare programs. And I’m only talking about the white welfare class.
Racial differences are never absolutes . The key realization concerning race is that there are average differences that provide a general basis for racial distinctions. Just as there needs to be a separation of the races to avoid racial conflict, there needs to be an emphasis on improving the quality of the average citizen, so that the more dysgenic elements do not become more numerous in future generations.

Regardless of the fact that Zora Neale Hurston was a humble negro or not, the one absolute point is that blacks and whites can’t live together in peace, additionally, there is a third ethnic group that is always looking for ways to exploit the tension caused by the racial differences for their own power and control. Separation of the black and white races is a start with the separation of the exploiters from white society the final solution.

True, but except for Owens, Riley and a few others, black conservatives are an aging and dying breed. Congressman Byron Donalds has the right combo of aggressiveness and smarts that are sorely lacking in Greene and Boebert, but again, his ilk are few and far between, in intellectual or political circles.
Very interesting and admirable woman. But as long as white liberals run the culture, “the sob school of Negrohood” will be too profitable for most negros to give up. I imagine when the asians and mexicans finally take over the country, they will have no interest in indulging the sobbers, and that school of thought will expire.

I am wondering if the quote you are thinking about goes something like this. He defended his heavyweight title somewhere in Sub-Saharan Africa and was later interviewed. One of the questions he was asked was his opinion of Africa. He said something like “Thank God by great grand daddy got on the slave boat.” I think I may have gotten that from Amren.com. It was quite a while ago.

What she calls the “sobbing school of negrohood” are those blacks who are attempting to appeal to the white saviorism side of this coin. The “sobbing school” is to white saviorism as the “Uncle Tom” is to white supremacy. Both define themselves by their subordinate relationship to whites, with the former as a childlike dependent, deserving and in need of white patronage, and the latter as a servant of whites. The blacks who do not want to define themselves in relation to whites, like this woman, are stepping outside of this supremacy-savior binary.

In any case her problem (and the problem of Black authors today) is that very few Blacks buy or read books, and any Black writer must accept that his/her readership will be 95% white. No Freed man stepped up to the plate to record the folk tales—that was up to Joel Chandler, and later, in the musical realm Gershwin wrote the opera, and Goodman promoted the jazz.

Seems to me that reparations, along with CRT, DEI, and the 1619 Project, are primarily weapons to revive the racial animosity that has largely diminished in the past half century. This explains why establishment foundations and the corporate media heap so much money and praise on them. Divide and conquer – it works every time to keep the people too angry and frightened to do something about the real bad guys who are bleeding us all dry. And it would also demolish the libertarian lie that government programs designed to improve the well being of the people can be sound and effective.
In balance it does seem true that in spite of the sometimes ugly and corrupting influence on both races of the African presence in the United States, it is a blunt truth that had their people remained in West Africa, their descendants would today be living under dictatorship, with wages ($250/year) and life expectancy (35) unchanged since their ancestors’ time. Some good has, and completely unintentionally on the part of whites, come out of slavery. Now the task remains to overcome the native human propensity to evaluate entire groups by the behaviors of some individuals.

I dont know much about the change in black behaviour in the US. However I do know a bit about this transition in the West Indies (WI) and South Africa (SA).
Lets establish a dividing characteristic. There are Blacks and there are Niggers.
In the Islands the dividing timeline was the mid 60’s when most colonial governments granted independence. Under colonial rule the population was Black. However after Independence the Blackness slowly faded and the population became Niggaz. With Niggerization, the few remaining Blacks fled to the UK and likewise, there, the Blackness faded and those communities became Niggerized.
In SA, the dividing timeline was the abolition of Apartheid. Prior to that there were Blacks but that also faded and now SA is not only Niggerized but the Niggers from every other AFrican country are eager to assist in the process.
Why was this so ? Blackness prior to Independence in the WI and before abolition of Apartheid was upheld by rule of law, education and a sense of responsibility. Niggerization resulted from acceptance of lawlessness, lack of education and lack of personal responsibility. That is why Blacks are appalled at Niggers !!
One other thing, is the mental state of the Niggra. When I lived in Jamaica you could travel from Montego Bay to Kingston at 8 am and see blacks just sitting on fences or bridges. Return at 5 pm and they would still be there. They are content to be idle. The Niggra, as long as he can eat a mango, suck on a stalk of sugar cane and live in a shack is content to not work. Once food shelter and clothing are available even in the poorest condition or general scarcity he will revel in being idle. If they do “work once they get paid they disappear, spend every cent and return a few weeks later with a sob story. I dont know how many employees had relatives die every month resulting in them being absent.
On my block there was a black shop. One would go there to get some basics. First, in the middle of the day, the owner was usually asleep in his hammock. You had to shout to wake him up and he would be pissed. Shopping would go like this:
-A loaf of bread please. Sorry, no bread
-OK a packet of biscuits then. Sorry no biscuits.
-Any eggs ? None ! Cheese ? None ! Jam ? None.
Finally, one might get some sweet drinks and make a $5 purchase. You pull out a $20 bill but, sorry again, the shopkeeper has no change. You had to leave and return with the exact change but then the shopman would be asleep again and you had to holler to wake him up AND he would be fucking angry at this second intrusion into his midday siesta. LMAO.
A Chinaman starts a shop in the same area. Everything is available. The Chinaman will sell you ONE cigarette or a tablespoon of butter or 4 ounces of flour.
Soon the black shop disintegrates into a rum shop selling liquor and soft drinks. A juke box is installed. There are always a fight there, a stabbing, a beating. At all hours of the day and night the music blares and men and women can be seen swaying to the sounds. The Colonial police shut the place down. The owner complains that the Chinaman, the Police, the Colonial Government and his fellow blacks are all against him and responsible for the failure of his business.
How is it that a Chinaman or an East Indian can open a shop in a predominantly black area and be prosperous BUTT a black man cannot open a shop in a white or even a black area and if he does is a dismal failure ? Hmmmmmmm ! Thousands of miles to the south east, in Niggra SA, the situation is exactly the same. How can that be ? How can the same race separated by time and space be so alike ?
And what is the experience in this regard in the US and the UK ??

Phillis Wheatley, born in Africa and owned by a Boston, MA family who trained her to read and write, spoke of the good fortune of having been saved from the land of her birth, hard as her life was. It’d be good to see research of her life printed here. She was the second American woman to have published a book.

I know there are whites who scam the disability system, but fraud is rampant in our social safety net system. Welfare fraud, disability fraud, Medicare, and Medicaid fraud are all a huge problem. It is committed not only by whites, but it has been revealed that blacks and many immigrant groups commit the most fraud since they often have the most access to government funds. No one has tried to put a stop to it because so many people (including small businesses and employees, medical professionals, and clinics) benefit from it.
As far as drug addiction, the discrimination of whites in education, hiring, and other opportunities has led to “deaths of despair”, especially in middle America. They should take some accountability for the situation they find themselves in, but it isn’t hard to understand considering the plight of many lower middle and working class whites today. If we could end education and hiring discrimination I think you would see less of this. The Supreme Court has somewhat moved the needle and helped to further this goal, but my fear is that institutions will continue to carry out their discriminatory policies and the ruling will not be enforced. It didn’t help that Roberts gave them a loophole to get around the ruling.
Many whites who were solidly middle class 20 or thirty years ago are now barely getting by and unable to find suitable work opportunities and have fallen into the lower middle and working class, or even underclass.
