New York City Progressives have got new pets. Progressives derive their spiritual nourishment from there being some population of poor people on whose behalf they can pose as humanitarians.
Back in the days when Marxism was taken seriously, the domestic working class filled that role. The working class, however, turned out to be a disappointment. They didn’t want revolution and they didn’t much mind capitalists getting super-wealthy so long as they, the working class, could live in a stable society under rule of law, with the opportunity to attain modest prosperity doing useful work, with decent provision of education and healthcare.
The disappointed Progressives turned to blacks as a group they could patronize. That didn’t work too well, either. Instead of being grateful to the patronizing Lefties, blacks felt, well, patronized and resentful.
And it turned out a lot of them didn’t like whites very much, or the nation they found themselves living in. As one of them told his followers: “God damn America!”]
What should Progressives do to be saved? What race or group can now serve as a backdrop for their humanitarian posturing?
The Biden administration, which is Blue State Progressivism enthroned, has given us a clear answer. Illegal aliens are the new proletariat, the new Negroes.
Progressives can’t get enough of them; they can’t do enough for them. This is exceptionally clear in today’s New York City.

Mr. Barber is an advocate for New York City’s public housing tenants, of whom there are a third of a million.
That twangs my heartstrings some. I spent most of my younger years, ages 3 to 18, in public housing … in England, not New York City.
I’m totally in favor of public housing, although I am of course well aware that public housing in 2020s New York City is not precisely the same thing as public housing in 1950s provincial England.
What’s Daniel Barber’s beef? His beef is that New York City is handing out city services—shelter, education, job training, health care and legal aid—to illegal aliens at a rate of, according to the city’s budget office, six hundred million dollars a year.

With an estimated seventeen thousand illegal aliens in the city, that’s better than $35,000 dollars per illegal per annum.
New York’s public-housing tenants, by contrast, got $774, 000 for support services in 2021. Since there are 339 thousand of them that’s only two dollars twenty-eight cents per capita … somewhat of a difference.
Yeah, sure: not many public housing tenants depend on city welfare programs. They’re working or on federal welfare programs; they get health care coverage from employee insurance or Medicaid; their kids’ education is separately funded, and so on. Still, six hundred million is a lot of dollars for criminal invaders, however often The New York Post refers to them as “asylum seekers.”
You can see why Mr. Barber is vexed.

The main reason New York City has so many illegal aliens is that Texas Governor Greg Abbott has been busing them up here since the summer on the very reasonable grounds that, since the mass illegal entry of foreigners is a national problem, it ought to be visible everywhere, not just in border states.
Progressives regard this as heartless and cynical. They want to patronize their victim class from a distance, not up close; just as their spiritual forebears, 19th-century abolitionists, wanted blacks to be freed, but to stay in the South. In the case of the American big cities, I don’t agree that this spending of Other People’s Money* on one set of pets vs. another is the issue. The blacks are not pets in NYC. They RUN the place. Their natural tribalism has them resenting any spending of OPM on either White people or any other freeloaders but their own.

I know it comes off pretty trite, Voltarde, but embrace the power of “AND”. First off, the $600 million annually is for one city, and it’s nothing near the total damage to the country, just economically speaking, from this long-term invasion. That economic cost alone has likely accumulated into the multiple trillions by now.

This is setting up one of the biggest intra-left political fights of the years to come. NYCHA is a very bizarre case of utter mismanagement. Had occasion to be in and around NYCHA since childhood. Well into the 1970s, some of the projects had working class white people as occupants. Over time, they, like any sensible person, they found their own homes in market rentals or bought a house. They were replaced largely by African-Americans. The buildings are all past what accountants would call their useful life.There’s practically no real maintenance. It would take billions to bring them up to livable, and there’s no money coming for that. Chicago blew up their public housing. Boston sold them. And everybody dumps the occupants into Section 8. Not NYC.
And NYC black occupants cling to them. And they do so knowing it’s a terrible situation. And they know nothing else. After Hurrican Sandy several of the buildings in Coney Island, Rockaway and the Lower East Side had no heat nor electricity for weeks. And they’re riddled with crime, drug gangs and occupants who don’t work. It’s garbage thrown out windows, perpetually broken elevators, stairwells stinking of marijuana, shit and piss, and drugs being sold in the hallways.
Looks like the liberals have decided to write them off, if quietly, and move on to new pets. They know these people will show up on Election Day out of some dumb fear of imaginary white supremacists. Roughly 476K people live there, so that’s probably roughly 300K votes for Hochul and Adams. There’s no real incentive to make things better. NYC, the place where Progressives were gushing over migrants as they invaded Europe a number of years ago. Now they are coming to their doorstep. I live in this hell hole, and I see groups of migrants a number of times a week. Barber is correct in his observation about the money being spent by the Adams administration. Adams has been jockeying for a political office for years. He was a “good pet” for so long that the uber-Progressives in NYC gave him the green light and support to run for mayor. After Big Bird DeBaslio, people would have voted for Daffy Duck. Yet Barber keeps his criticism away from Adams personally. Thou shalt not attack a brother. Even though it ha been Abbott in Texas who has been sending this illegal migrants up to NY, Adams is still maintaining the policies that kind of – sort of make it attractive for migrants to come here. Blacks in general, at least publicly or in front of whitey, appear oblivious to the whole phenomenon of illegal immigration. It’s not “lack of maintenance”, but the subhuman culture of the residents themselves. It’s the old “tragedy of the commons” all over again. Since black public housing residents don’t own their residences, there is no incentive for them to take care of their living spaces. Soap and water is cheap, but is still unused by blacks.
Criminality also figures into the poor condition of some public housing projects. When maintenance people are afraid to enter these public housing projects due to being personally accosted or their work vehicles broken into and ransacked, who can blame them for the “lack of maintenance?”
It’s the subhuman culture of the residents themselves that is responsible for the condition of public housing. Blacks do not take any pride in keeping their living spaces clean. From garbage being strewn all over the common areas to the resident’s living spaces, it is their own behavior that is “keeping them down”. Personal responsibility does not exist in black culture.
