So much space continues to be dedicated to the Hamas attack more than two weeks on. But this article from Mondoweiss is a rare attempt to try to piece together the events of October 7 without relying simply on Israel’s official, increasingly strained narrative.
The author explains the response of the Israeli army to Hamas’ incursion into Israel and capture of Israeli communities near Gaza in terms of Israel’s infamous “Hannibal directive”. That military directive compels the Israeli army to kill Israelis rather than let them be taken hostage. It usually applies to military personnel, but has been used against Israeli civilians too.
The author cites plenty of evidence indicating that the Hannibal directive was likely to have been applied as policy towards Israeli civilians captured by Hamas and held hostage in their own homes inside Israel.
In other words, the army appears to have preferred to kill both Israeli civilians and the Hamas militants holding them rather than try to negotiate a release.
That would explain the images of Israeli communities near Gaza that are in ruins, with sections of the walls of homes blasted down and the remains of buildings charred by fire. The article cites evidence that this appears not necessarily to have happened in the heat of battle after the army’s arrival but following a prolonged stand-off with Hamas.
Were a significant number of the 1,400 Israelis who died during the Hamas attack killed as a result of intentional efforts to stop them being taken by Hamas into Gaza?
Here is an Israeli survivor of the Hamas attack speaking about how the Israeli army sprayed her building with live fire, killing Hamas militants and Israeli civilians indiscriminately – in line with the ‘Hannibal directive’.
Electronic Intifada first unearthed this interview, noting that it appears to have been taken down by Israeli radio.
Hamas’ release of an American mother and daughter last week, which has tended to baffle western media outlets, can be understood most easily in the context of Israel’s Hannibal directive.
Hamas knows only too well about the directive. It assumes Israel will choose to kill all the hostages Hamas now has in Gaza that cannot be recovered through a ground invasion rather than engage in negotiations for their return.
Hamas also understands that Israel will make the case that there was no chance to bring the hostages home. That is why Israel is working so hard to argue that Hamas is the same as al-Qaeda and Islamic State.
It was the reason Israel promoted the evidence-free claim that Hamas beheaded babies – paradoxically what little evidence Israel did produce, mainly of what looked like a charred small body, may have been a death from a fire its own military activity caused.
This week President Isaac Herzog launched a new disinformation operation, claiming a dead Hamas fighter was found with an al-Qaeda manual on how to make chemical weapons. Even assuming the manual was not planted, it contains no such information.
This kind of manipulation of western public opinion is designed to soften us up for an intensification of Israeli atrocities, ethnic cleansing and genocide. The logic of Israel’s messaging is that, if it faces a death cult like Islamic State, it must do whatever is possible to root it out of Gaza.
The argument is that Hamas is immune to reason, there is nothing to negotiate over, and therefore committing ethnic cleansing and genocide in Gaza is fully justified.
Conversely, Hamas is trying to show that it is ready to do a deal and release the hostages. However, that would need Israel to address its many grievances, including negotiating a ceasefire to end the current bombing campaign against Gaza, freeing Palestinian prisoners, and ending the 16-year siege of the enclave. Israel is not ready to make concessions on any of these points.
The wider problem for Hamas is that western media is in lockstep with Israeli spin that Hamas is a death cult like Islamic State and cannot be talked to, rather than the reality that it is a political and military resistance movement fighting for Palestinian liberation. As a result, many of the Israeli hostages are likely to die unnecessarily – alongside, of course, far larger numbers of Palestinians.

Governments killing their own people? This is standard operating procedure. Gov’ts draft their able bodied people to become cannon fodder in their manufactured wars, their wars of choice. They mandate that poison be injected into the populations under the guise of a vaccine for an illness no more serious than the flu. The thing that has always astounded me about the Israelis is that they will always cry “human shields!” even when this is a lie, as though if your opponent uses a human shield you’re justified in shooting through them.
Human shields are supposed to work. But for decades Israel has gotten away with the big story not being that the Israelis shoot through them.
In general we have to ask from first principals.
Why is there a conflict between Hamas and Israel? Because of the occupation.
Why there is still an occupation if ending it would end the conflict? Because the Israels want to annex the territory. As is the case with the West Bank.
Why don’t they annex it then? Because it has too many Palestinians to absorb. And the geography and density of population makes the settlement strategy nonviable.
Therefore the long-term strategy for Gaza must logically be to diminish, destroy or displace the population and also to avoid peace and use every opening to try to make life hard and difficult to encourage emigration.
So far we’ve seen the Israelis order the total evacuation of Gaza city and the rest of North Gaza and the staging of massive forces not at the Eastern entrance but the Northern one implying a continual movement of an Israeli army down from one side of Gaza to the South. This presages an attempt to force the Gazans out to Egypt.
For the bigger picture we can also say.
Israel entering Gaza in force would itself trigger Hezbollah to go to war. Israel whether in actuality or just perceived to be engaging in this pushing of Palestinians out of Gaza would also force Syria and Iran, perhaps even Egypt to get directly involved. This would be a total disaster for the US and hasten it’s decline as a hegemon and put it to the sword economically. Biden (Or Harris) would lose the election to Trump or RFK Jr.
We can also say that there is no strategic value in Israel invading Gaza otherwise and it would be a bloody mess for the IDF and even put them in a serious situation fighting a war in Gaza and South Lebanon, at the least, at the same time.
Given this, why is there still an Israeli army massing for an invasion? Why were 300k reservists called up? If the US wanted to, this whole situation could be brought to an end easily. So why hasn’t it tried to do so? All of this is the obvious outcome.
It’s not happening because the Biden admin is very neocon infested and, indeed, Blinken looks to the brains here.
So if a regional war is inevitable from this and the only reason to do it is to either dispossess the Gazans in whole or significant part, perhaps even by doing something like building a wall between North and South Gaza and leaving Gaza city a ghost town and to create a regional war to suck the US into taking out Syria and Iran for Israel. Then we must conclude that the US is fully prepared and agrees with this.
And we have news today that the Eisenhower carrier group has been diverted from it’s original course of the Israeli coast to join the Ford carrier group to instead join the carrier group in the Gulf. 2 carriers on Syria always seemed a bit odd to me, 2 on Iran makes more sense. The neocons and Israelis can see they overreached and killed the golden goose of American hegemony.
What do you do with a deflating currency? You spend it sooner rather than later. This situation is most likely a unique opening for the war on Iran and war on Syria they have failed to get after so many years of lobbying. It may also be a unique opening to ethnically cleanse the Gazans with full US cover for the resulting regional war. Not to mention that Netanyahu has a chance to go from the end of his political career an several court cases to being the hero who delivered the US war on Iran he has promised to bring for so long.
In the Hamas attacks its fighters undoubtedly killed some civilians. But both logic and the known evidence indicates they wanted them as captives – not dead. The brave fighters of the IDF preferred dead civilians to bargaining-chip prisoners. (Hannibal Directive).
