Regarding the drama about Elon’s “Nazi salute”:

It was clear from the context (and what Elon was saying) that he was very much “feeling the moment,” hyped, triumphant and … well, autistic. He then “threw his heart to the crowd” and said “thank you” and “my heart goes out to you.”

Elon didn’t give a “Nazi salute” nor a “Roman salute” – nor was it really an official “salute” of any kind.

It was an informal and extemporaneous gesture of Elon’s own creation intended to show his heartfelt appreciation.

That being said, it does raise interesting questions about what exactly a “salute” is, where it comes from and how it evolved as a social convention in the first place. The Roman salute may well have begun as a gesture the intended meaning of which was, essentially (if not precisely), “my heart goes out to you” in which case Elon, effectively, reinvented (or discovered) from first principles an ancient gesture which, in modern times, has been stigmatized due to its association with the group which just happened, tragically, to have lost the last war.

(And, when objectively observing the world today, the losers of that conflict were obviously, to any gentile capable of independent thought, actually the “good guys” by any reasonable standard – but that’s another matter.)

As with the actual Roman salute, Elon’s “salute” was an expression of triumph, devotion and “thank you” as one might imagine a crowd would give to a victorious general upon arrival back in Rome after a successful campaign, or what a victorious general might give to the men who served under him and they’d give back – or, for example, what Titus or Hadrian might have received in Rome after vanquishing a horde of treacherous fanatics perpetrating a seditious and barbaric rebellion in Palestine.

Elon’s particular throwing of this gesture in a moment of hype and thoughtless emotional exuberance was, I must say, one of the most sincere expressions of the “Roman salute” or, indeed, of any “salute” that I have ever seen. It was kinda badass.
