Race riot in he South, 1863. Wikipedia: “Rioters subjected black men to the most brutal violence: torture, hanging, and burning.” Eleven were lynched. The Southern mob depicted here were afraid that if the North won the Civil War, freed slaves would take the jobs of whites.
Virginian though I am, a son of the Shenandoah, and brought up among the lazy rivers of the state of Marse Bob Lee and Stonewall—rivers where the sun always seemed to shine and you could mostly catch catfish, and almost think that being alive was a good thing until further experience intervened—I have to admit the deep vileness in the Southern soul. Yes. It was this that brought forth such scenes as above. I cannot deny that the events portrayed happened in the South.
The south of Manhattan, anyway, the drawing being of the race riots of 1863 in New York, in which Yankee mobs killed 115 or so innocent people, many of them black.
Here was early evidence of the deep regard in which Yankees held black men—and still hold them if you look at actions and not protestations. There is nothing like a damn Yank to tell how good he is, how drowning in the curds and cream of human kindness, without in his actions displaying a trace of it.
But should we be surprised? These were the same blue-coats who exterminated the Indians. “The only good Indian,” said the Yankee general Sherman, “is a dead Indian.” Such charitable musings were not unique to him. It was a Yankee named Custer, if memory serves, who after the war devoted himself in the name of the Yankee government to killing Indians, though with mixed results. Yet another Yankee general, Phil Sheridan, wanted to slaughter the western buffalo to starve the Indians to death. I cannot withold my admiration for Northerners for the consistency of their racial philosopy.
Do not misunderstand me. I do not mean to imply that Northerners are the world’s mother lode of preening fraud and practiced hypocrisy. I mean to state it. To talk to these geysers of virtue, you would be sure that their principal object in life was to help the black man, to admit him to the human race as an equal and a brother. I imagine them waking up in the middle of the night thinking how they might advance their darker brethren. Most of them likely do not get enough sleep because of it.
Yet I confess a desire for confirmation. I want to say to them, “Yea, verily. And when was the last time you had black friends to dinner?”
Or even, “And while we are thinking of your deep wells of goodness, those crystalline pools of measureless depth—when was the last time you dined in a restaurant where the majority of the patrons were black…ummm?”
As I thought.
I remember years back that the Washingtonian, the suburban coffee-table magazine of the Yankee Capital, surveyed the news room of the Washington Post, that epicenter of racial oneness, of inattention to color, to see how many of the white reporters sent their children to the black public schools of Washington. “All of them,” I hear you say. “Such paladins of brotherhood could do nothing else.”
Zero. Not one child in a black school. The minute the wife knew that she was pregnant, the couple moved to Montgomery County, Maryland. But no, no!Not because of race! Perish forefend. It was because, well…the shopping was better. Yes, that was it. The shopping.
But perhaps the best way to compare the dark night of the Southern soul with the supernal radiance to the north is to compare the schools the two regions provide for their freed slaves. One would expect schools in the South to be poor, and they are. But in the North, surely the schools are of a high order, well regulated, producing through their lofty academic standards black graduates scoring high on the SATs and not needing the humiliations of affirmative action.
Surely this is what we will see. Otherwise we would have to concede that, 150 years after the Civil War, the North is still holding black children in illiteracy and squalor. Then, Lord save us, we might doubt the purity of Northern intentions.
Fear not! Nothing can be more admirable that the black schools of such northern precincts as, say, Newark, Trenton, Camden, New York, Philadelphia, Detroit, Cincinnati, Flint, Gary, St. Louis, Pittsburg, Baltimore, Chicago, and Washington—schools in the very intestines of Yankeedom. Why, one can hardly tell them from Groton. They display for all to see the superior morals of the North.
They do indeed.
Yanks love to talk about slavery, which they say was horrible and inexcusable. It was. This is today like blaming Jews for killing Christ (“Gosh, Rachel, you don’t look old enough.”) But logic confuses Yanks, so I will not essay it. Anyway, slavery existed because in economic terms it was well suited to plantations, and accomplished the enrichment of greedy men of negligible decency—which is to say, businessmen.

But slavery was ill-suited to an industrial state. It lacked flexibility. You had to feed and maintain slaves whether business was up or down. They were a burden and a responsibility. Kindly Yankees hit upon the superior idea of sweated labor, usually of immigrants who had no way of defending themselves. These could be fired when convenient. If they then died it was a matter of no account as, the Lord be praised, more were arriving by the boatload.

Of course this wholesome system sometimes resulted in unfortunate revelations. If to save a few dollars the master of a noisesome tenement neglected to install fire escapes, and in the ensuing conflagration girls were clutching each other and jumping to their deaths from the seventh floor to avoid being burned to death—ah, well. The ways of God were mysterious, and girls easily replaced.
There was no slavery, though. That would have been immoral.

After the Civil War, Yankees continued, as they do today, their encouragement of integration for everyone else. Yankees are always sure of what someone else ought to do. Since most blacks were in the South, it was safe to be for racial amity as the North would not have to practice it. When blacks migrated north, the Yanks contained them in poor parts of the cities, as they do today (consult the list of cities foregoing). There were occasional adventures such as the Harlem Renaissance, when fashionable Northerners could go to the Cotton Club and mingle, barely, with real blacks. “Why, they are just like people, almost. Look at them dance!” Uptown, they might keep a few trained and gelded blacks around as ornaments. That was the extent of it.
Is this not what one would expect, in the light of the Yankee’s firm belief that blacks are an inferior strain, half devil and half child, bearing the mark of Ham and incapable of the higher forms of civilization? No, Yanks do not say this, but their every action gives the game away. Always they lower the standard for the black man, but never try to raise the black man to the standard. Why? Because they do not believe that blacks can reach the standards of whites. What is “affirmative action” but the belief that a black cannot perform at the white man’s level? Sometimes they talk of “the tyranny of low expectations.” Indeed. But who in Newark holds those low expectations?
Southerners, I reckon.
Forgive me. I do not mean to offend residents of the North, where virtue runs in the streets until it clogs the storm drains, and the low-hanging branches of trees are damaged by the halos of pedestrians.

Americans weren’t always good but American Civilization did once stand for sound values, and step by step, Americans became better and helped make the world better.
Now, the very core of what America stands for is vile to the core. The only good things in America is high-tech, tons of natural resources, and 40% of Americans who still some semblance of moral order. But the rest? Piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiewwwwwww!!!
As for Negroes, while it’s true that the white man did some bad stuff to them, it would have been immeasurably worse if white southerners had allowed Negroes to run wild because blacks have more of the savage Mao gene that makes them act like Mike Tyson and stuff. And as they are more muscular and aggressive, that could be pretty frightening.
Indeed, look at cities that Negroes took over. Chaos reigned and as a result more Negroes got killed by other Negroes in a year than all the Negroes that were lynched in the South since the end of the Civil War.
I done heard that around 2,000 Negroes done get lynched — and some of them were prolly guilty of doing nasty shit like raping white womenfolk — in the hundred yrs from 1863 to 1963, but in any given year in some big ass city, Negroes be killing one another like crazy.
So, even though white folks could be brutal, white order over Negroes was preferable to letting Negroes running wild and creating places like Detroit, Cape Town the Rape Town, Newark, Chicago South Side, and other places where Negroes be acting like they is back in Africa with spears and bongo drums and shit.

Blacks and Hispanics will never reach the level of Whites. Blacks should have ALL been shipped back to Africa after the Civil War. Hispanics should all be deported NOW. The fact is that all nonWhites are incompatible with White civilization. To pretend otherwise is to be in deep, deep denial.
No criticism of a criticism of the current situation but I see Mr. Reed’s article as more sparks of illumination as the fuel doesn’t seem to me to be concentrated enough for the fire he purports could be ignited. Perhaps a younger generation should be his focus though if you could get one, a Constitutional Convention now might be enough as most groups would think it a good idea to divide into separate factions. Leads to a lot of armchair speculation as to how it would work out.

Regarding the Indian wars, indeed, Yanks were prolific in jackbooting redskins. Their southern counterparts, however, were equally skilled in bashing the heads of women and children. Blacks were not welcome in New York City throughout the 1800s. New York was so hostile to Blacks in those days, it turns out, that the city saw zero net Black growth, which implies strong Black emigration.
Just look at the numbers. From a time when Black numbers in the South were skyrocketing.

Blacks overall, 1820-1870, had 1.4 population doublings in the USA, and New York City beat the USA’s average growth rate by a wide margin. All else equal, then, New York “should’ve” had many tens of thousands of Blacks by 1870, maybe even 100,000. But between Black Flight and those allegedly “fanatically progressive anti-racist Yankees” keeping Blacks out, it wasn’t to be.
It was to be later, starting about WWI, when a lot had changed, when a pointless European war intervened to bring in labor, and by which time those “fanatically anti-racist progressive WASPs” were just starting to lose power in their own hearthland.
In General W.T. Sherman’s collected letters, we can see that he very frequently used the word “niggers” to refer to Blacks (“nigger” was definitely a clear-and-away ethnic slur in the 1860s, though not to the hysterical level it is today; in some letters he does use “Colored”, “Negro”, and other terms, I recall). Sherman spoke poorly of Blacks in his writings, calling them useless, that kind of thing. This was correspondence with people like General Grant and others in esteemed positions, and even his wife.
(Sherman was generally talking about Blacks who attached themselves to Union Army camps and triumphantly demanded handouts, and invited themselves to continue receiving handouts from the army for a while; months, years, whatever. The polite term for these people was “contraband”).
White racialism was very near the political center of the USA in those days, even from a strong advocate of the Northern side as in Sherman. Evidence for this very easy to find. (Lincoln himself was a fairly strong White racialist, at least according to his own words and his often-discussed Black re-/de-patriation plan.)
The theory that a long-continuing “WASP far-left progressivism” has been responsible for the past fifty years of change in the USA is easily shown to be false, if you just look at people’s own words and so on. The WASPs weren’t actually, you know, radically progressive at all. Except a radical fringe, but then that’s the definition of a radical fringe. (I think we can understand the popularity of this theory, call it “The Eternal WASP Problem” as a function of current perceived power. It’s easy to kick the WASP. There is no risk. No one will give you any heat for it, ever, in the 2010s. This is not true of criticism of certain other groups.)

FACT: Sub-Sarahan Africa had next to little contact whatsoever with the outside world from about the Paleolithic era, or roughly after the last Ice Age, and the rest of man’s progenitors vacated the area to mix with Neanderthals, up to about…..ca.800BC, when they were encountered by the Arabs.
FACT: Sub-Saharan Africa had little to no direct contact whatsoever with Western Europe until the Portuguese sailed the Horn of Africa around early 1400’s. The colonization period of Africa did not start until around 1800’s.
FACT: Therefore in all this time of no direct contact with the outside world (as in centuries and eons of years) Africa could have developed all the features of a civilization but it did not.

Re: African post colonial life:
Before the white man, The African spent his life hunting and fishing, cooking the meat over open fires, camping, exercising, playing adventure sports, choosing his daughter’s mates, and participating in bonding rituals with his sons; swimming, competing at sports with other men, having sex and children, taking care of his parents growing crops and practicing manual skills and handicrafts. Well, technically, Dred Scott was not a US citizen or rather a full US citizen. He was originally a slave, which meant he was a piece of property, per the Constitution. Therefore at the time and in the legal context, a slave was a slave and unless made free in someone’s will, he was never free to begin with. When he happened to move to a US territory, and later back to US state, the law would state that he was still a slave.
In the proper legal constitutional context of mid. 19th century, with slavery as part of the US, that was in fact the proper constitutional verdict to render, at that time.
People tend to forget that part. At that time, Roger Taney made the correct decision. A slave was a piece of property. He had been sold, there was a bill of sale and therefore he was not a full US citizen.

Not necessarily. Some who express concern with current political/socioeconomic trends do so out of genuine trepidation as to what comes next. Actually the “Filos” were among the few colonized people who actually did fare better under American rule. I once saw some Dept. of Education (USA) English reader textbooks for Filipino children,, c. 1900-1910, and they were beautifully illustrated, intelligently written, and culturally respectful. The U.S. government (of which I am profoundly cynical, generally) went to enormous lengths to make the Philippine people their allies. Since the Philippines were already Christian, albeit Catholic, that was easier. To this day, older Filipinos are more often pro-American than not. According to an ex-Marine of my acquaintance, things soured during the Vietnam era, naturally. Please offer evidence to support your assertion, since the Department of Education did not exist until 1980! You probably meant to say Office of Education. Anyways, this dissertation states otherwise–please begin on page 54. Basically, depictions of Filipino children were modeled after Africa-American children–indolent, savage, and inferior who required our help to “uplift” them. Now, to be fair, the federal government did work diligently to train Filipino teachers in the arts of western civilization, with a deemphasis on their cultural practices and an emphasis on industrial vocations.

Actually on numerous counts, compared to the more backward south, northern education, or northern aid, limited as it was, often provided a better deal for the black man. It took a northern Jew, Julius Rosenwald, founder of Sears Roebuck, to come south and help build thousands of black schools after WW1. It took hundreds of white missionary teachers from the northern churches after the Civil War to found the first education and schools for ex-slaves in the south after the Civil War. Everyone from liberals (WEB Dubois), to conservatives (Booker T Washington) praised and recognized the positive contributions that the northerners made. The comparison is relative- as it always is. Northern schools were no paragons, but they were better on many counts that what the south could produce.

Partly true, but slavery was something that benefited southern white non-businessmen as well in various ways. For one thing many plantations provided a ready market for white farmers produce. The owners preferred to devote huge tracts of land to actual cash crops like cotton or sugar, and were able to easily buy the food needed from surrounding white farmers to keep their slave labor force alive. Slavery was also a way for a southern white to “move up” in society- a means of social mobility. The ideal move up was to acquire some slaves to work your land, or business. Then expand that year by year to join the ranks of the local notables.

Not really. Northerners were in the forefront of trying to raise standards, not only for blacks but for whites as well. The same missionary zeal that sent hundreds of white teachers south to make such an invaluable contribution to black education, also was deployed in the slums of the white north in various “uplift” projects- from the many orphanages, to the settlement houses of the Progressive era, to the early welfare and charity efforts that helped white Irish families stay alive, to the hospitals and sanitation campaigns to likewise help whites, to the many schools and educational efforts at the grassroots to help the white poor. Black people aren’t anything special when it comes to getting such help. It was white progressives in the north, and some white elites that pioneered it, with the major beneficiaries of these overall efforts, being white.
What is “affirmative action” but the belief that a black cannot perform at the white man’s level?
Actually affirmative action was pioneered by whites to lock out competition from other groups. White only quotas are the basic standard for most of American history. And groups like the white Irish actually discriminated against native born whites as they vacuumed up huge amounts of resources, while locking out other groups from a fair competition. And fully one third of all working Irish were once employed by the government in various decades.
And AA in the modern era originated in the 1930s with white union members who went to court to get “goals and timetables” and protections from discrimination by employers, who denied them promotions or jobs because they were union members. Court ordered remedies to do such did not originate with black people, but with whites as far back as the 1930s. (Sowell 2004). And the major beneficiaries of quotas are white women, who not only gained remedies against being denied equal pay or promotions, etc but also gained significantly where government contracting was concerned- among other things.
And as Ron Unz has shown recently, whites like Jews are heavily over-represented in elite institutions way out of proportion not only to their population level, but performance level as well, ousting better non-Jewish whites for coveted slots. But few outside a narrow area are talking about this favoritism and special treatment towards Jews, when there are easier black scapegoats to be bashed..

On top of that were numerous “white only” job reservation and barriers- effectively affirmative action for whites back in the 1700s. They bashed the white south, but were at times, just as racist. Similar to today, they just hide it better. Malcolm X said several times he preferred an honest racist to a deceptive white liberal- because at least he knew up front what he had to contend with.

One would have better luck teaching Down’s victims to spell “floccinaucinihilipilification.” Depending on when your numbers above were compiled, “whites” may or may not have included “hispanics” and may have represented anything from 80% of the population total to just 60% of the population total. “Black,” on the other hand, would be more certain at around 12-13% of the population total. Regardless, it is clear that “blacks” welfare dependency is wildly disproportionate to whites. Additionally, when you weigh the fact that State and Federal bureaucracies are mainly “make work” jobs programs for otherwise unemployable negroes, the situation is even more dire.
