I have been confused about the state of affairs in the west. One central confusion is why smart people believe and do obviously stupid things.
I am not talking about Trump. He is not a smart person. He is the polar opposite of the self-claimed “stable genius”. But many bureaucrats in Washington and other western capitals did come out of top universities, have stellar resumes, and seem to have above-average IQs.
Why do these people subscribe to patently stupid narratives and ideologies? Why do these seemingly intelligent people believe in fantasies like: “unprovoked Russian invasion”, the Israeli jews are the good guys and their genocide is justified, the US can win a war against China in Taiwan, the west can dominate the world like the 19th century, there is no global warming, and there is no consequence to nuclear brinksmanship.
It is one thing to manufacture consent to fool the population into supporting insane policies. The “demo” is normally low information and clueless anyway despite being bombarded by 24 hour news channels. It is another thing for the elite to drink their own kool-Aid.
Is it because these elites are so ideologically committed and rigid that they simply cannot see the delusion and derangement of these ideologies and narratives? I highly doubt that. If anything, these elites get where they are by being immoral, unethical and unprincipled. It’s hard to imagine such corrupt individuals hold anything holy and sacrosanct. They won’t flinch a bit to sell their mothers to make a buck or get ahead. If you think they have normal human qualities, you are simply projecting.
Is this because they reject rational thinking by default and appeal to the population’s worst instincts through faux popularism? There may be some of it but most narratives come from these elites and are spoon-fed to the population. Aren’t they afraid to look foolish by promoting such idiotic ideas such as there is no global warming or “if there is, it is just god is hugging the Americans closer”?
Are they so deranged to think everyone will believe some 5-foot-5 130-pound Arab bro who couldn’t fly a Cessna could somehow overpower ex-military pilots and manoeuvre a Boeing 767 jumbo jet like a top-gun ace to crash into a building at ground level without touching the lawn? It so happened that some auditors were looking for $2.3 trillion in “misplaced” Pentagon funds (disclosed the day before) at the very part of the building.
My hypothesis is the west is now in a death spiral of demeritocracy. Demeritocracy is what happens to an organization or system when normally intelligent people think, say and do patently irrational things to fit in and get ahead.
For example, in order to get into the national security arena in the west today, you have to believe and claim that Russia and China pose a threat to Europe and America regardless of facts. You have to promote the idea Russia and China are the aggressive parties when it is the US and the west that encircle them with military bases, navy armada, surveillance jets, and missile launcher. It doesn’t matter if you are looking for a job or career advancement in government departments, in think tanks, in academia or in media that is in any way related to national security. You have to embrace the narrative.
Same thing in economic arena, you have to promote the idea that China’s economic growth is over, Russia is about to collapse from the sanctions, and the inflation rate in the US is 3%. These are truisms to be trusted in the face of contradictory data and evidence. Otherwise, say goodbye to the TV panel slot, the USAID grant, a job at the IMF, etc. etc. In fact, you will be socially ostracized or even debanked for spreading disinformation and being an agent of Putin and Xi.
In order to get in the club of the elite, you have to embrace the craziest beliefs of that club. In fact, you have to be crazier than the next guy to get ahead. It’s more than go along to get along. It is a race to the bottom.
When irrationality prevails and you can only advance by being more and more delusional and stupid, you are in the blissful state of demeritocracy. And you get to be a proud member of the club that is a self-licking ice cream.

It just occurred to me why Trump made that ridiculous gesture of “renaming” the Gulf of Mexico. He is mocking the Chinese for claiming the South China Sea as their territorial waters.
As for global warming, I’ve been alive for nearly half a century. Would people notice the supposed warming if they didn’t hear non-stop propaganda about it? Do they actually notice it, or do they think they notice it? I recall a story in our local news reminding people that even though Summer was over and colder weather was beginning, that high temperatures (there are many psychological tricks they use when reporting the weather here to exaggerate how hot it is. They don’t like to tell you about the weather that actually happened, they’re more interested in exaggerated predictions.) would be back next summer. The notion of global warming as an imminent “ecological catastrophe” is simply not credible. How many “chicken little” predictions have these people made to try to frighten the general public? How many people really believe the water is going to rise and flood their coastal dwellings?
What is “the world” supposed to do about it? I can tell you the #1 thing it should NOT DO. Consider the Chinese to have the solution.
There is not a practical solution, but there are infinite “austerities” that can pushed to bring us closer to the unattainable “net zero” fever dream. Sane people could not even invent such an idea, and if the Chinese actually believe in such a thing (I don’t believe it for a moment!), they are insane themselves.
It is true that the old Western ideal of personal honesty and integrity being an essential part of personal honor has vanished. The crudeness of the propaganda for the “mainstream” in the West (as opposed to the propaganda for the Right, which has a more duplicitous character) is a function of this loss of integrity. Those spouting “the party line” or shouting slogans and parroting trash akin to Mao’s red booklet are very stupid or simply conforming without any internal struggle, because they say what they must say to keep their positions.
I don’t believe the United States antagonism with the Chinese government is entirely real. Those scientists fooling around with viruses in Wuhan were under the oversight of the Chinese government.
The United States has had decades to react to China, yet they’ve never done anything but strengthen the Chinese state.
The boomers have given the United States a decrepit appearance, but do not be so sure things will remain this way forever here.

When university education was less common people learned history, languages including Latin, geography and so on. Not anymore. People learn marketing and that’s it. Or law. Easy its called the entire home renovation scandal where one buys a house one day for 200,000 dollars and then turns around and spends 60,000 on Reno’s and voila he flips said property for 300,000 plus. I owned a home on Vancouver Island north and sold said property believing what my agent told me would be the good and proper price of it only to turn around gobsmacked that the new owners flipped it not 6 months later for a 20,000 profit? This was back in the 1980’s!!! I felt robbed and there was no Chinese druggies involved. It was just an ignorant real estate agent. burns me up to this very day. And in today’s world nothing blew my mind than seeing a friend turn around and sell his ten year old home for 1.7 millions dollars here on the mainland. A home just a spec house with no views of waterfronts, mountains nothing and the house has laminate flooring? Laminate flooring? What i ask my self would the price of this home be if he decided to remove the fake with real wood? 2 million dollars? the word for this kind of nonsense is called false fake prosperity. And lastly a work friend a couple of years ago was gushing to me about moving into the oknagan where he is going to become rich joining some friend, question mark, in the home renovation market, and become rich in a very short time. He died probably from a stressful broken heart who got suckered when he realized you can’t but a home for a million and flip it for 2 million.

Yeah, that would be a nice chair rail, good choice and then said that’ll add a good 20,000 to the price of your home. Particle wood?! It was when I turned and looked at him and was about to reply when I saw his expression knowing and understanding what i know. How many times can this keep occurring before the price of real estate is out of everyone’s price range. I mean its true what that author says the price of real estate in Vancouver is at such dizzying heights that people are moving away even professionals with good paying jobs because even they can’t afford homes. I just shake my head at it all especially when I see the fools all jealous of others and want in paying a premium thinking they’ll be able to turn around and have the cash to buy a boat outright. And the real estate agent who sold my friends house guess what he did with his commission on the sale. I was told be the seller he went out and bought a small plane and paid cash for it!!
I hate real estate agents. And know what my friend said to me in disgust. Do you know how much and how hard i have to work for what he made for a mere 30 minutes of work. The house was sold that fast! Drug trade? Go be an ostrich and stick your head in the sand!!!

Agreed. I too have over 65 years spent living, working and entertaining myself in outdoor western Canada and you ca rest assured that our tempertatures are as stable as ever. Its sad reading or listening to smart people unable to break free from these, over population like chains.
My point was as a not to question the faith but to point out most people good or bad go with the flow for their self interest. Im not cutting down on religion, American or the Chinese. To not understand this make for a huge miss calculation when understanding human nature. I am not even taking a moral stand on the issue like the author good or bad it is just what it is. Your comment is very thought provoking. There can be no doubt that the relationship between the large American corporations, the “deep state”, and Chinese leadership pre-date Kissinger’s visit. The planning that has taken place to promote a nwo, cripple the west, and destroy the middle class MUST have included plans to utilize China’s vast resources, hard working people, and strategic location.

Dear Ron: this chink is opinionated, and pointedly anti-White, but not particularly bright.
The answers are really pretty simple-
1- Propaganda, large scale, non-stop, all encompassing, overwhelming… propaganda. That’s the easy part.
2- Enforced Conformity- To cement the above, is the societal pressures that essentially FORCE compliance with the approved narrative, or be shunned from polite society. Pretty much every topic in the public sphere, has an approved narrative; The one pushed by CNN, The New York Times, the Washington Post, the AP, etc., and if anyone tries to diverge from it, even in the slightest, they are instantly labeled kooky, crazy, nutty, believing in conspiracy theories, or panned as just “dead wrong about the facts”.
It didn’t used to be that way, but it is now- the pandemic, Russia and Ukraine, Israel, election integrity, vaccines, whatever, you name it, and there is an “approved narrative” and everything else is considered heresy. It’s done with a religious fervor, and it’s very hard for many to break-out of this trap, and doing so comes with sometimes severe consequences.
3- Unenforced conformity- Outside of the above, is most people’s natural predilection to “go along to get along”. They don’t want to confront lies in every conversation, or buck the narrative, or be at odds with everyone that they know, all the time, about everything. They just want to work, sleep, eat, recreate… in peace.
And there you have it, the “why” we are where we are.
Regarding Mao
Go look at ANY photograph of Mao with his entourage.
It doesn’t matter if it’s a candid photograph taken alongside some rural road, or a formal studio portrait of the gang, there is one thing and one thing only which is consistent with all of them.
The ONLY people within arm’s length of Mao are 5 men. 5 JEWISH men.
All of the Chinese in his entourage were never allowed anywhere near him.

Hua Bin says the bureaucrats in Washington who agree with these stupid claims and policies are smart.
Hua Bin doesn’t understand Trump, and his assessment of people’s intelligence is overly based on credentials.
And he apparently doesn’t know that Trump graduated from a top university — the University of Pennsylvania — an Ivy League school that is ranked 14th in the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities.
