There is a huge literature that tries to explain the disparities between different racial groups, especially between blacks and whites. The most popular titles blame geography and conquest. Unfortunately, their ideas blend together in the public consciousness and create an inaccurate view of history that portrays the population of sub-Saharan Africa as victims. In my experience teaching secondary and post-secondary history, a majority of students have trouble putting events within an era or epoch. The result is a hodgepodge of fantastic narratives, memes, and baseless arguments.
When an instructor begins a course, he needs to evaluate the knowledge of new students. Today’s students cannot correctly place the Civil War, World War I, or World War II within 50 years of their actual occurrence. Needless to say, they are hopeless with subject matter of greater antiquity. The result is that students do not understand cause and effect. Even those who have learned an adequate amount of material have learned it in unrelated pieces, without understanding their impact on other events.
Part of the problem is that so many learn history from documentary films; they do not read books. Some teachers are no better. A fellow graduate student once told me how excited she was to teach her class Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States. I asked her about the merits of the book and probed to see what other reading she had done. To my amazement, she admitted that Prof. Zinn’s book was the only history book that she had ever read. She could not even name another historian.
Zinn’s anti-white book is widely used, but even Stanford University has an article on its biases. Any serious historian who has read it would find it laughable. For example, it assumes the American colonists were anti-Indian because of simple racism. In fact, in King Philip’s War, which broke out just 55 years after the Mayflower arrived, tribal animosities were the main cause. The colonists aligned themselves with the Mohegans, Pequots and Mohawks against the Wampanoag, Nipmuc, and Narragansetts.
Another major source used in modern classrooms is Jared Diamond’s Guns, Germs and Steel. Most teachers do not actually read the 480-page book; they show the documentary to their classes. Part of Prof. Diamond’s thesis is that Africa lagged behind Europe because it did not have animals that could be domesticated. The best candidate was the zebra, but Prof. Diamond says Zebras are too easily frightened to be domesticated. Europeans tried to tame zebras in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but they never got beyond basic taming for pulling carriages as a luxury for rich people.
Of course, other easily frightened animals have been domesticated; it just took a long time. Rabbits are easily frightened, but they were fully domesticated in Germany as pets by the 15th century. Prof. Diamond cannot tell us how the dog or horse were domesticated because that was long before documented history.
Another problem for Prof. Diamond is that West Africans were involved in trade during the late Roman Empire. The Ghanian Empire, as it is called today, was a major commercial hub. Even if draft animals had not been domesticated in Africa by the third century AD, Africans could have traded for them.
Prof. Diamond’s book does not even have footnotes — only suggested readings — but it has been cited over 30,000 times in academic papers and books on Google Scholar.
Many students believe Africa is weak because Europeans colonized and looted it, an argument popularized in How Europe Underdeveloped Africa by Walter Rodney. I hear this so often that I ask students to pull out their phones and do a Google search for the dates of African colonization. It did not start until after slavery had ended in the United States. Why was Africa weak until then?
Africa’s rivers with rocks and rapids could not be navigated with large wind-powered boats. Long-distance travel on these rivers was impossible until the invention of small, steam powered vessels like the one in The African Queen, which could be disassembled and reassembled. Also, colonization was partially spurred by the American Civil War. The North’s naval blockade of the South led the Spanish and French to begin vying for power in Indochina as a way to get raw materials instead of backing the Confederacy. The race for colonies in the era of New Imperialism led to a new push into Africa. Africa was not colonized until the late 1800s, so it was not the cause of Africa’s weakness.
The obvious reason for black Africa’s backwardness is low average IQ, for which there is overwhelming evidence, but Thomas Sowell tries to offer other explanations in his book Intellectuals and Race. Tribalism was based on physical strength. Africans resolved disputes by bringing as many friends as possible to the battlefield. There was no rule of law. Other societies that had legal systems culled violent criminals who could not adapt. In Facing Reality, Charles Murray notes that British population records show the disappearance of last names associated with criminality. These people were jailed or executed and failed to reproduce.
American academics use any excuse to explain black failure, but any serious study would have a control group. For example, is there any sub-Saharan country where blacks are better off than they are in the United States? No. Does having a black teacher improve black grades? No.
Put a Japanese student anywhere in the world and he will turn out like a Japanese. The same is true for a student from sub-Saharan Africa. Making scapegoats of Europeans for black failure makes it impossible for our country to understand the problem, much less try to solve it.

Ignoring context is a sign of low IQ so it’s hard to take this writer seriously after he ignores the context of Howard Zinn’s book. Also it’s a sign of low IQ that the writer does not consider the positive value of various frames of reference when studying history. History is by definition a representation of past reality, where ‘truth’ is elusive and accuracy is the highest value, but accuracy is often debated by historians of the highest caliber, and focus in one area leaves other areas in shadow.
The context in which Zinn wrote his book was an official American History focused on wealthy white people portrayed as heroes, and where a general history of non elites was not available to the student or educated reader. Thus Zinn, explicitly, focused on writing the history of those whose story had not been told. That’s why it’s called a ‘people’s history’, in contrast to the typical ‘elite history’.
Zinn’s book is a ‘general historical survey’, so, as in all such books, it’s impossible to explore the nitty gritty details.
This is not to claim that Zinn got ‘everything right’, of course. But by focusing on those ‘left out of’ the general history books he provided students with an alternative historical frame of reference, that one could then explore. For example, he told the general story of the white working class and their history of resistance to elite domination, via organizing unions and participating in political movements. Many people only know of Eugene Debs, third party candidate for prez who got a high percentage of votes, imprisoned by the Wilson admin for resisting USA entrance to WWI (which is in my opinion the key moment when the USA went from republic to empire, at the elite level, same time they brought in the FED, same time they pushed for the colonization of Palestine), because of Zinn’s book.

Geography does have influence, but it is actually the opposite of what you might assume at first glance. In fact, sub-Saharan Africa makes the living easy. The climate is warm, the food grows everywhere, the natural disasters are actually pretty rare. By contrast, Europe is harsh, and intermittent ice ages made it harsher still. So people had to evolve to be future-oriented and rational.

The problem with history books and teaching is more fundamental than the ideological presuppositions of the historian.
Similarly, the problem with teaching history is more fundamental than the textbooks used for instruction.
The more fundamental problem in both cases is the absence of any ontological and epistemological underpinnings of the whole history profession.
The ontological problem is that history is the only discipline that seeks knowledge of objects that do not exists.
The astronomer, biologist, chemist, physicists; all natural scientist seek knowledge of observable, describable, measurable phenomena.
But, for example, the American Civil War, does not exist.

The Europeans (after about 1960) had a major influence on the Black culture and society.
For instance prior to 1960 or so, the Men always walked ahead in single file followed by women and children. This is because humans are prey in Africa and things like Lions and Leopards, Hyenas and Hunting Dogs tend to take the slowest and weakest.

Namely that it confuses necessary and sufficient conditions. It might be necessary for advancement in agriculture or industry that certain geographical or environmental conditions should or should not obtain. Thus for example the abundance of coal was a necessary condition for the Industrial Revolution to kick off in Britain. But these necessary conditions do not amount to a sufficient condition. If Africa had had all these factors in their favour then it is still necessary that the people have sufficient intelligence and social capital to take the next step.

The full swing of European colonization of Africa began with the gradual dissolution of the British Empire. I don’t know about the USA but the contents of bookshops in the UK and continental Europe tend to lean slightly left in political terms, which makes me wonder if this is because right-wing people are less likely to read books.

History has always been a construct since narratives are stories where significant events are mentioned or not or characterized an certain way or not depending on the teller of the tale. When Napoleon said that history is what I say it is, he understood the nature of history: creating an story sufficiently aligned with demonstrable events to be persuasive and keeping competing inconsistent stories out of circulation. Of course, it first matters that someone hasn’t suppressed the evidence or suppressed or defamed the historian; think the non-publication of ‘Two Hundred Years Together’. Or the disparagement of ‘Lincoln the Man’, both historical masterpieces effectively suppressed.

Even going by Prof. Diamond’s arguments, it is not entirely the geography that decides the fate of societies there, it is the collective behaviour of the societies too.
Lets take North America; when the first humans reached there, there were huge population of animals, including horses; humans hunted them to extinction, thus depriving their descendants of animals fit for domestication. Now, if only those humans showed some restraint, limiting themselves to leave some animals for future, their descendants, according to Prof. Diamond, would have had animals for domestication, and in due course, Amerindians would have developed equal to Europeans, right? The story of Australia is also very similar. The early arrivals hunted megafauna to extinction, and their descendants were deprived of civilisation. Therefore, not all ancestors were equally intelligent. Therefore, human intelligence has a role even in an uncivilised society.

In the case of Two Hundred Years Together the behavior of the Russians and Jews described by Solzhenitsyn can be used to make reasonable predictions about how they might behave today or tomorrow. Which of course is why the book was suppressed.
Your example also directs attention to something else just as important and relevant to the Sullivan’s article. That Solzhenitsyn was far more responsible with the documents he was working with to write his book than Zinn could ever be. When you put a Japanese into the American high school system, he will not turn out nearly as well as when you put him through, say, the Singaporean high school system. That’s because the American education system has been dumbed down to such an extent that it prevents (or, rather, actively discourages) people from reaching their full potential.
