Actually, her CV doesn’t list any foreign languages. That’s pretty strange. Usually, people will list a language they took as an undergraduate, even though they are far from being fluent. They will say something like “some knowledge of French” or whatever language they took back then. Not to list anything is to acknowledge that one never took a class in a foreign language, and one expects better from a cosmopolitan place like Harvard.

The fact English is so widely taught and spoken as a second language around the world hinders development of language competence in the US — it’s a kind of linguistic chauvinism — so it doesn’t really surprise me.

I think it’s more important to note that her ‘work’ is junk academic nonsense — I’ve made several comments about this recently (some of them), and I don’t think people appreciate the seriousness and extent of the problem — some of the data is fairly startling: e.g. in the not too distant future, women will be 60% of college grads (this will further depress marriage and fertility rates as many of these women fail to find suitable husbands), and whereas in 1970 men outnumbered women in law school 10:1, today there are 25% more women (the potential damage female norms will do to the legal profession and the courts is significant).

Some years ago I heard Bill Maher say ‘There’s no such thing as being qualified to hold public office — Mary Bono is in Congress because her husband skied into a tree.’

Similarly, there’s no such thing as not being qualified to be a university president — probably any reasonably intelligent, erudite, outgoing and congenial person (fundraising is usually an important task) could do the job (whether one person or another would be better for the position is a different question) — perhaps experience in academia would help.

One can question her intellect and the quality of her scholarship, or ask if there were ‘better’ candidates, albeit with the criteria being largely subjective, it’s not clear what exact qualities would make another candidate ‘better’ — but it does seem safe to say that race (not white) and sex (female) were among the fixed criteria — this is where the problem with Gay lies, i.e. not with her being ‘unqualified.’

But even when they have a chance to oppose this kind of thing, faux conservatives in America do nothing — here I am thinking of the Supreme Court nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson, where Biden publicly announced beforehand he would select a black woman — this should have caused every fair-minded member of the Senate, especially among Republicans, to say they would boycott and oppose her nomination on principle — but that didn’t happen.

Being qualified for public office is not the same thing as running a prestigious, private institution. Democracy, in theory, should allow the voters to determine if a candidate is qualified, notwithstanding activist judges in Colorado. A recent egregious example of questionable qualifications occurred when Dianne Feinstein finally died, and the governor of California declared that he would fill her senate seat with a black woman, yet he selected someone who lived out-of-state. One might think that living in California is the basic requirement for a senator representing California.

Being the president of a university is different. These people receive authority due to their position, but the role is widely regarded to be a glorified money-raiser. The key qualification should be to not unnecessarily alienate the university’s donors. There is also an established precedent that a university president has earned some academic credentials. Harvard being a top school, it would follow that its president has top credentials.

While Gay has a PhD, she has been accused of plagiarizing parts of her doctoral thesis, along with other academic papers she has published. Someone in this comment thread (#31) has stated that she doesn’t even claim to know a foreign language, which is a prerequisite for a PhD in the social sciences.

In China the government controls the actions of the banks, including the central bank. Consequently, banking must adhere to set regulations that are in line with a more or less long-term anticipatory economic policy. In the US, it’s typically the other way around. Especially at the central bank level, where monetary policy is a function of a ‘private’ entity not tightly regulated by legislative or executive oversight.

His (or her) reputation is assumed to ride on the merits of whatever document the student produces under his (or her) tutelage.

How could her dissertation committee, which is assembled from tenured faculty in the student’s area of specialization, be so stupid, or so remiss, as not to read the tendered document and not to notice the blatant swaths of stolen words and stolen ideas? This particular committee, drawn from political science scholars employed at Harvard, is tasked not only with evaluating the worth of what this student purportedly produced, and whether it is worthy of conferring a doctorate degree upon this woman, is equally importantly charged with upholding the standards and reputation of the entire institution of higher education called Harvard University.

Along with presentation of their dissertation to the committee, the Ph.D. candidate also gives an hour long oral presentation of their purportedly “new” scholastic discoveries before an “open-to-the-public audience, followed by at least another hour defending any and all observations, interpretations and novel conclusions reported in the dissertation and its public oral presentation. If the candidate is a fraud this should be discernable at any of the three key stages to what should be a rigorous evaluation in i) reading the dissertation, ii} orally presenting the dissertation and iii) defending any new facts, interpretations and applications during the final oral exam step. It is rare, but possible to be denied the degree even upon completion of the very last step in one’s oral defense.

I hope for the sake of our civilization, which has become increasingly underpinned by the hard sciences and high technology, that our academic institutions have not appreciably diminished the rigor in their degree programs merely to accommodate the artificial production of increased numbers of black and female students assumed capable of being plugged into all the important high paying job openings currently being created by affirmative action and downright racial and gender discrimination against white males.

I retired from Academe in 2004. Twenty years of unrelenting black and female privilege since then may well have put us beyond the point of no return, in a system I personally saw degenerating over the preceding 40 or more years, though nowhere near as rapidly. I was one of the first to ignore the preference of my colleagues and opened the doors wide to Asian students in the 1980’s. They quickly took over most science departments, first as students, then as professors and now as administrators. They are incredibly different from blacks. They (mostly) deserve every reward which they achieve and are discriminated against as badly as white males. This assumes you believe that jobs should be filled on the basis of merit and capability rather than identity politics. Personally, I don’t think there is any other way. Not just Russia and China, but Iran and most other countries that the US foolishly chooses to consider enemies (and therefore inferior in every way) have proven to be quite the match for American science and technology.

As a regular joe that grew up in the inner city of Cleveland Ohio at the very beginning of desegregation the baptism by fire that was the busing of black and White children in some cases more than 15 miles across town for reasons only the “scholars” of that era can explain, I can say this, watching how many of the black children acted at that time with authority figures was stunning. In the 7th grade I kid you not, I saw black males with beards in the same grade as me.

Dwight Eisenhower served as president of the Columbia University after the end the world war. Many regarded him as not entirely suited to the position but his interest in international relations was evident while he was there and he did influence the institution’s Postwar course.
