The Checkup With Dr. Wen: Another farmworker caught H5N1. What worries me is what comes next.

Health officials on Wednesday announced a new human case of avian flu, the second from presumed cow-to-human transmission and the third ever H5N1 infection in the United States. While I agree with their assessment that the risk of bird flu remains low for most Americans, this new case raises questions and concerns.

Here’s what we know: The case involves a farmworker in Michigan who was regularly exposed to livestock, including cows infected with avian flu. The person had only mild symptoms, specifically conjunctivitis (or inflammation of the eye), and has recovered.

This course of illness mirrors that of the Texas dairy worker who tested positive last month for H5N1, which is reassuring. In the past, H5N1 has led to severe illness in humans, with a global fatality rate of more than 50 percent, but these cases were mild. The same is true of the instance in 2022 of a man in Colorado who contracted the virus from poultry.

Another reassuring aspect is that the Michigan farmworker was enrolled in what’s called an active monitoring program. Nirav D. Shah, principal deputy director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, explained on a call with reporters Wednesday that the worker was being tracked by the state’s health department. This person received a daily text message asking if they were experiencing any symptoms. After acknowledging some eye redness, the state offered to test them right away.

Such active monitoring is terrific. It allows farmworkers, many of whom normally lack health-care access, a direct line to report symptoms and receive public health guidance.

However, Shah said about 170 people are enrolled in the Michigan program, which seems low. Michigan has 19 farms across nine counties that are known to have H5N1 outbreaks. It’s great that active monitoring was successful, but what about workers not in the program?

Another number that stuck out to me during the briefing: About 40 people have been tested for H5N1 since March. Again, this seems low — very low. Especially since avian flu has manifested in the three U.S. cases as mild symptoms, could there be additional human infections that we don’t know about because they were never flagged and tested?

Curiously, the Michigan farmworker tested negative via nasal swab, the traditional method used to detect influenza. The positive test was the result of a conjunctival swab, meaning it was taken by lowering the eyelid and rubbing the swab directly on the eye.

On the one hand, the lack of virus in a nasal swab is good news. A major factor in determining how concerned we should be is how easily the virus spreads. High viral concentrations in someone’s nose and mouth increase the likelihood of the virus being spread to others. While it’s certainly possible to spread infections through eye secretions, the transmissibility should not be as high as, for example, the coronavirus, which can be spread simply by breathing and talking.

On the other hand, clinicians need to be extra vigilant. They should follow the guidance from the CDC not only to take the traditional nasopharyngeal swab but also to test the eye. And those exposed to potentially infected cows and poultry should be alert to conjunctivitis as a possible symptom of H5N1.

Federal health leaders stressed that they are hard at work to ensure that treatments and vaccines will be ready to deploy if needed. I agree that we are much better prepared to handle avian flu compared with the start of covid-19. I also agree that this is not the time for most Americans to start changing behaviors, such as avoiding dairy products. After all, the human H5N1 cases thus far have all been in people with direct contact with infected animals. There has been no instance of human-to-human transmission in this outbreak.

What worries me is what comes next. Shah referred to “variable cooperation among farmworkers” in the call and alluded to Michigan being among the states with a more fine-tuned public health response. As avian flu spreads to more herds, the chance of additional human cases increases, requiring more engagement with farms, workers and health departments.

Indeed, Shah advises these entities around the country to “take steps to prepare for the possibility that their jurisdiction, their farm or the workers that they work with, and their organizations may themselves experience a case of H5N1.”

I hope health officials and farms alike will heed this call.

The following was written as a comment to a current article to CHD. I regard it as my best brief summary of the cv-1984 scamdemic. The coming bird flu scamdemic 2.0, makes it more relevant than ancient history, particularly in regard to the WHO attempted global power grab this month.

The average “global citizen,” even the more educated ones, does not have enough understanding of molecular biology or even basic chemistry to understand that the scamdemic was totally built on hoax and fraud. The Wuhan “lab leak” theory, always popular by most conservatives in the USA, was put into place prior to the rollout of the scamdemic, our Overlords knowing that the original theory, a natural outcome of a love child between a bat and a pangolin would fall apart. The first thing to understand is that purportedly pumping money into purported gain-of-function research (which may have been just massive money laundering) does not mean success in the purported weaponization of the research.

1) At its base is the fact that this virus has never been isolated.

He was appalled by its use to diagnose AIDS. He died a few months prior to the rollout of the scamdemic. I suggest that one read his book, which is surprisingly well written.

5) CV-1984 was not more lethal or contagious than the “traditional” influenza. The use of toxic protocols (not the least of which was Rundeathisnear in all US hospital by decree and intubation, raised the mortality figures greatly. If one looks at the CDC figures during the height of the scamdemic, the traditional flu (whether caused by a virus or something else) took a long deserved vacation and almost disappeared from its statistics. In short, CV-1984 cause of death, when not really caused by motorcycle accidents or gunshots, was the traditional flu rebranded.

6) Finally we have the reverse placebo effect, effected by an incredibly intense global media fear porn campaign, which caused patients who survived their respiratory illness to claim that “this was nothing like the flu illnesses I have had in the past.”

All indications and facts show that what we had was an engineered virus released in more than one place at a time. Mostly Chinese, Italians and a good deal of Iranians died all around the same time. I know personally a friend who is a paramedic who picked up a patient and got it himself. He said he felt he came very close to dying. This was early in the epidemic, so he likely got a more powerful strain. Lucky for him, being a paramedic, he was given good care in the hospital and survived, but still has health problems.

Those that say it was a hoax are only paying attention to the effects of the virus “long term” but viruses always mutate to be less viral and a viral weapons researcher I read an interview with said that artificial engineered viruses break up even faster than the normal ones. This is exactly what we saw. A very viral, fast acting virus that quickly mutated to a less virulent form. So fast that now people are saying it was a hoax but…what about all the bodies? What about all these mass deaths? It was a shit load of people. In Wuhan, they locked the city down, all the pollution disappeared but after a few days of videos of people falling out in the streets, the whole city became covered in haze. People said this was from the mass burning of bodies of those that died. Lots and lots of people died in Italy and Iran. These are real numbers, real bodies, not fake.

I believe that the Jewish virus researcher that went to China and set up the Wuhan lab, arrested by Trump, also set them up in a line of research related to the corona virus. Then later the Jews released their engineered virus in China, Italy, Iran and USA. They then blamed it on the Chinese.

But use your head for something other than holding your hat. The Chinese likely had a good system. All the Chinese scientist didn’t die or get covid. Meaning, it wasn’t them who released it. And the idea that the Chinese or the US released it as a weapon is so stupid as to be zero possibility. The reason is this is like firing nuclear weapons at people to be releasing lethal viruses. But the Jews, being genocidal at heart, have no such qualms and could blame it on the Chinese while getting their genocide kicks on.

One reason I blather on about this is that anyone reading this if there is another big outbreak of some sort of killer virus, DO NOT think for a minute it might all be a hoax. It could very well be real. The last one was real and killed a great number of people. That they used it to push another killer, the vax, doesn’t make the original engineered virus any less deadly. It was deadly for those that got the early version before it mutated. You should stockpile mask, water and some food such that you could survive a few months indoors in case the Jews release something even worse.
