I have done extensive research on Vietnam as well as spending time there.
Vietnam is not a homogeneous country. There are substantial differences in the many languages spoken as well as regional differences as well.
North and South Vietnam could have easily co-existed but the communists wanted “the whole pie”.
When the North finally got control of the whole country, the communists attempted to impose the same communist system of controls on the South Vietnamese as were imposed on the North Vietnamese. It didn’t work.
From the imposition of rationing systems, land redistribution (to party members) and other communist demands, people in the South were having none of it. Of course, they went through the motions to avoid imprisonment and exile but the communist rulers were unsuccessful in imposing communist practices, the same system that was imposed on the North.
Vietnam has a socialist economy and government which abandoned most communist practices.

Vietnam is not a homogeneous country.

Compared to Western civic entities, VN is completely homogenous. Think about China. The Chinese diaspora. Many ethnic groups with indigenous language dialects, yet they are all (if you ask them) Chinese. Same with Vietnamese.
