But let’s look at this seriously for a minute, conceding that Israel succeeded in causing a lot of injuries and some deaths…

1) There’s no evidence these attacks reached anyone in the upper echelons of Hizbullah’s military. None.
2) There’s also no evidence that those attacked were members of Hizbullah’s military wing. At least two children are dead, and many hospital workers wounded, suggesting a large number of individuals injured were civilians.
3) Assuming, for the sake of argument, it had intended to kill those targeted — a safe assumption to make — the fatality to attack ratio is miserably low.
4) As I wrote earlier today, Israel’s intention was to make this an opening salvo to an all-out offensive. That offensive has not materialized and the opportunity is now lost.
5) Thousands of devices did not detonate, providing Hizbullah with the advantage of close forensic examination of them.
6) To many Israeli military officers, both former and present, the attacks are underwhelming. This is evident by the fact that they’re more concerned with Israel’s impending defeat.
7) Once the dust settles, the occasion will serve to make Hizbullah even more cautious about its telecom strategies and open opportunities for alternative parties (e.g. China) to provide solutions to the problem.
