Back in 1992, East Palo Alto was the Murder Capital of America, so a Stanford professor invented ShotSpotter to notify the cops when gunshots were heard.
So ShotSpotter provides another source of unpoliticized evidence that the return of Black Lives Matter led to blacks shooting each other in large numbers. Here’s a study of ShotSpotter and 911 calls in eight cities in 2020, with the baseline set to the week before the death of George Floyd. In the right hand graph, the dashed vertical line is the beginning of the pandemic and red vertical line is the the death of Floyd.
As you can see, shots heard by the machinery were pretty stable until the beginning of the Racial Reckoning, after which shots heard immediately more than doubled over the next four weeks, then stabilized at maybe more than 75% of the third week of May until receding to only about 50% more shooty as cold weather set in in later November 2020.

How do high-profile acts of police brutality affect public trust and cooperation with law enforcement? To investigate this question, we develop a new measure of civilian crime reporting that isolates changes in community engagement with police from underlying changes in crime: the ratio of police-related 911 calls to gunshots detected by ShotSpotter technology. Examining detailed data from eight major American cities, we show a sharp drop in both the call-to-shot ratio and 911 call volume immediately after the police murder of George Floyd in May 2020. Notably, reporting rates decreased significantly in both non-white and white neighborhoods across the country. These effects persist for several months, and we find little evidence that they were reversed by the conviction of Floyd’s murderer. Together, the results illustrate how acts of police violence may destroy a key input into effective law enforcement and public safety: civilian engagement and reporting.
It would seem most interesting to me that shots fired exploded as soon as Black Lives Matter was resuscitated at the end of May 2020, but the authors are more concerned with the decline in 911 calls. It looks like 911 calls for shots fired went up considerably in June 2020, although not as much as, you know, shots actually fired.
But then the public gave up around the Fourth of July. Was this because the Message of the Racial Reckoning — the cops are the Bad Guys while black men shooting guns are the Good Guys — finally got through to the masses?
Or is that when people realized this was just the Shootier New Normal?
Or did the enormous wave of firecrackers set off leading up to the Fourth of July have something to do with it? Last summer there were a series of bangs around the corner from me that sounded to me more like gunfire than firecrackers. So I grabbed my phone, dove on the floor, and called 911. I got into a discussion with the 911 operator over what chance it really was gunfire or just firecrackers. I explained I was down on the floor so evidently I was concerned. When asked for a percentage estimate of being gunshots, I said, “25%.” Evidently, that wasn’t high enough so I got shunted to a nonemergency line. But somebody else called in and gave a higher number because soon an LAPD helicopter was overhead.
I didn’t hear anything more about it, so I presume it was firecrackers.

The event was called the “Miami Bully Takeover” and was apparently for non-papered pit bulls. So it clearly drew a different demographic than the Westminster dog show.

I don’t buy that BLM is a spontaneous political expression. It has an uncanny tendency to perform its act in the run up to presidential elections. Virtually every Democrat cheered on the looting, arson and violence. Police in Democratic cities ordered the police to step down. No prosecutions.
If Trump returns to run in 2024, I think we’ll get another dose of BLM.

The frequency of gunfire has gone in the opposite direction in rural Vermont. “Shooting parties” used to be a commonplace around here, but now, one hears only a couple of rounds every couple of weeks, likely for sighting-in, if that’s the term. I’d imagine that as gunshots become more frequent, the public becomes desensitized – at least insofar as those who hear the gunfire begin to figure that someone else will or already has made the 911 call. It’s probably more of this spreading of responsibility commensurate with the increase than anything else.
However, keep in mind that at least on the fringes of BLM (the whole thing is the fringe, but of course there is a media curated part) it was proposed that calling police on blacks in the act was tantamount to killing them, so you have to imagine that the message got through to at least some blacks and some pro-BLM PMC whites in gentrified areas who might hear gunfire from time to time. Like maybe a hipster who hears shots reasons “well, these black guys probably missed each other when they were shooting, but if I call the cops a racist white officer with marksmanship skill will arrive and just execute these guys willy-nilly and that would be really bad so I’m just going to mind my own business.”

So far ShotSpotter has resulted in two Chicago cops being terminated by trains, and at least one being shot by a perp.

Black criminality and physical violence have been powerful political tools for progressives long before BLM came along. Black columnist Carl Rowan wrote the book “The Coming Race War in America” many years ago, and everyday black violence of the day (most of it black on black) gave the book’s absurd conclusions credibility with fearful white liberals. That’s just one of thousands of examples. I’m convinced that an in depth psychological analysis of wokeness would reveal a deep seated fear of being hit, stabbed, shot, raped or murdered by blacks, at least among woke whites.
I can’t wait until the different factions, BLM, antifa, etc go knives out on each other.

Shotspotter appears to be very flawed. The Citizen app is a phone app that tells you about ongoing police and fire department activity in a given area. The Citizen app in NYC has incorporated the shotspotter data. So many times every night your phone goes off with a notification that shotspotter indicates that shots have been fired. Would appear it makes far more notifications of gunfire than there is actual gunfire. Many loud noises-fireworks especially, but also loud cars and motorcycles, trucks loading and unloading, loud music-are things shotspotter thinks are really gunfire. Readily agree gun violence in cities is up, but shotspotter many not be a very good way to determine that until it figures out how to weed out sounds that are not really gunfire.
Oakland PD informs that ’21 murders are on a record-breaking pace; a month ago the body count had already hit 100.
Its ShotSpotter has been ringing off-the-hook these past whatever number of months. The high numbers certainly indicate more thugs firing their guns (usually at one another), which is the important thing. The amusing aspect is that OPD union guys don’t understand the principle of triangulation.
OPD issues a regular report of local crime statistics. It includes the number of SS alarms, i.e. # of detected event(s), as though each event were an independent shooting (emptying a clip counts as one event). Further down, in the news release, it provides a count of the number of shootings, with no further analysis or discussion, that’s always around ⅓ of the SS number.

Voters just down the road from E Palo Alto, within the Los Gatos Union School District, are now being asked to approve Measure B, which would extend and increase ($290 -> $335) the parcel tax. Nearby, the Berryessa Union School District is trying to extend its own, $79 per parcel tax.
So here in ruralish Maryland 30 miles away from Lagos on the Bay, Bmore to the inhabitants I hear a gunshot every week or two. Both my floor and the police are as unaffected by this as I am.

Red, a 17 year old black girl was shot and killed two weeks ago in Buffalo. She was shot while riding in a car or van. Thre driver drove more than a mile before he stopped and sought help. No one at or near the actual shooting site called 911 or the police. I wonder why?

How well does ShotSpotter pinpoint the location of the shot? If it can co it to within, say, five feet, then you could use cell phone GPS data to find out who the shooter was, or at least know who was near the shooter. Eventually, blacks would figure out that they needed to leave their phones wt home for a drive-by time, but you might catch spur-of-the-moment shooters.
Also, blacks could be fitted with implanted conscientiousness assistants, if all young blacks had a voice in their heads and a camera in their required google glass eyewear, so they know they’d get caught if they commit a crime, maybe that would reduce the black crime rate.
That, or someone needs to teach these boys how to shoot! There are way too many wounded. Wounded is more expensive for society. Sometimes, a lot more expensive. Kills likely save us money, because they don’t have to be incarcerated in their form-bands-and-fight-the-other-bands-for-women life phase. On the other hand, wounded can mean up to hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical costs. They need dialysis, cuz they lost their livers. They need wheelchairs and benefits for the rest of their lives, they need ever-scarce donated organs, depriving decent alcoholics of the livers they need. There are all kinds of costs of wounded blacks. I hate to say it, but dead blacks, the sort people shoot at, are probably better for society at large.
Blacks should work on their behavior, just in case a right-wing regime comes into power and has cold-hearted bean counters. Maybe tech companies can prevent that, but real-world interpersonal contact, which the working class has, but more and more the professional and chatty classes do not have, means a real-world revolution that happens later, and so is worse for everyone, still happens. Seems to me that stopping immigration completely, which removes the immediate cause of conservative dissatisfaction, is the most reasonable thing to do. The American system is built on compromise and the people in power not pushing things too far. I think that’s an aspect of Old America that we have lost.
We should be in favor of bikeable cities and towns, the FBI might not think to tag your bicycle. You should ride a bike or walk to your real-world concerned citizens group meetings.

Sound travels faster in hot air. It travels farther in cold air. Not sure which is “better.” Increased humidity also allows sound waves to travel faster, which is why explosive experts try to avoid setting them off in high humidity conditions.

I’ll share a story from my youth. I lived in the ghetto. I inhabited (with a couple buddies) the only white occupied house on my street. It was Independence Day and we had illegally obtained a quantity of Chinese crap that blew up.
Now on our highly diverse street in the 80’s, there were daily shootings and stabbings by the diverse population. The police came when they had no alternative.
So, after about 45 minutes of blowing up fireworks in the street, along comes a parade of cop cars. The first one pulls up to the drunken crackers in the street amid a rubble of exploded Chinese debris, asks me if I have heard any gunfire, and upon my assurance that I have not, quickly rolls up his window and leads the parade of pigs safely from my neighborhood.
